COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team will face ACC counterpart Virginia on Saturday, April 14 at 4:00 p.m. at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown. The game is part of the SHUT-OUT Cancer College Classic and proceeds from the event will go to the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource & Image Center.
"It is a privilege to participate for such a great cause since all of us are in someway touched by the cruelty of cancer," head coach Sasho Cirovski said.
The game is part of the annual KICKS Against Breast Cancer Women's College Soccer Tournament and the SHUT-OUT Cancer Men's College Soccer Classic. Games begin at 9:55 a.m. in Germantown and the day ends with the two featured matches: Maryland vs. Virginia on the men's side and North Carolina vs. Virginia on the women's side.
Proceeds will be split between the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and the Howard Country General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource & Image Center.
The KICKS Against Breast Cancer Intercollegiate Soccer Tournament was established in honor of Claudia Mayer, a friend of tournament Director Louise Waxler (WUSA/Washington Freedom), who passed away in 1996 after a two-year battle with breast cancer.
Since the inception of the tournament 10 years ago, donations and fundraising by participating teams has totaled more than $450,000. The funds have been used to assist with the operating expenses for Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in Columbia, Maryland. Since the inaugural tournament, many other businesses have joined in establishing additional fundraising events. Small in size but large in compassion, the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center is a service of Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. It combines a comfortable, well-selected lending library and private, fully equipped salon all under one roof.
