Box Score
College Park, Md. -
The Maryland Terrapins were unable to carry over the momentum from Saturday's come from behind win over North Carolina State, falling 8-1 Sunday to the 25th ranked Wolfpack. The defending ACC champs recorded three home runs and 13 hits in the game, compared with only six hits for the Terps.
Heather Gelbard, NC State's lead off hitter smashed a home run in the first inning and a two-run triple in the third to help the Pack take a 5-1 lead after three.
Lindsay Klein drove in the lone Maryland run, with a double in the second inning to scored Megan Booth from second, for Klein's fourth RBI in the last two games. She recorded two huge home runs in Maryland's rally Saturday, to bring the Terps back from a 4-1 deficit in that game.
There would be no Maryland comeback today, however. NC State added one run each in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings to put the Terps away.
The Wolfpack's Abbie Sims earned the win to improve to 26-5 on the season. The four-time ACC Player of the Week struck out six Terps and allowed six hits. The senior was effective offensively as well, hitting her second home run of the series in the fourth inning.
Meredith Nelles and Abbey Welch again split the pitching duties for the Terrapins, with Nelles getting the start and taking the loss to fall to 17-10 on the season.
The sunny weather brought out another big crowd to Robert E. Taylor Stadium. A day after the Terps played before their biggest home crowd in two years of 518 fans, Maryland filled the stands with an attendance of 273.
"It really helps a lot," Maryland Coach Laura Watten said of Saturday's crowd. "The fans had great energy, and it really makes the girls feel supported."
Maryland's 7-4 win on Saturday snapped NC State's 16 game winning streak, the longest in school history.
With the win in Sunday, NC State wrapped up the second seed in the ACC Tournament on May 10. Maryland will be the six seed if they can win one game in a weekend series with Boston College next weekend.
The Terps return to action with a Wednesday doubleheader versus Penn State. Game one will be broadcast nationally on CSTV.
