COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland sophomore guard Greivis Vasquez (Caracas, Venezuela/Montrose Christian) will square off against Team USA Wednesday (August 22) night as the Venezuelan national team takes on USA in the opening game of the 2007 FIBA Americas Championships in Las Vegas. Tip-off is set for 11:00 p.m. EST at the Thomas & Mack Center and can be seen on ESPN Classic. The game will be immediately replayed at 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning on ESPN2.
Vasquez has spent the past month with the Venezuelan national team as they toured the globe preparing for the FIBA Championships. After taking on Team USA, Venezuela will face Canada Thursday (August 23) afternoon at 6:00 p.m. EST in a game that can be seen on NBA TV.
Venezuela faces Brazil Friday (August 24) night at 11:00 p.m. EST in a game which can be seen on NBA TV. The Venezuelans will close out the preliminary round Sunday (August 26) at 4:00 p.m. EST against the Virgin Islands. The quarterfinal round is scheduled to begin August 27, while the bronze and gold medal games are scheduled for September 2.
Vasquez earned ACC All-Freshman honorable mention in 2006-07. He finished the year with 149 assists, the third-highest assist total among freshmen in the history of the school. Vasquez ranked sixth in the ACC in assists (4.62) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71). He averaged 9.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season. Vasquez narrowly missed the first triple-double at Maryland in 20 years as he posted 13 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds at Duke on February 28.
