No. 6 Women's Lacrosse Opens 2008 In Massachusetts This Weekend

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 Maryland women's lacrosse team will begin its 2008 season on Friday, February 22 when it heads to Amherst to take on Massachusetts at noon at McGuirk Stadium. The Terrapins will then head east to face Boston College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Bentley College.

    Terps Open 2008 In Massachusetts
    • No. 6 Maryland opens its 35th season of women's lacrosse on Friday, February 22 when it travels to Amherst to take on Massachusetts. The Terrapins will then open their ACC schedule on Sunday, February 24 when they head East across the Mass Pike to face Boston College.
    • The Terps finished 2007 with a 16-4 record, going 4-1 in the conference to earn the ACC regular season title. First year head coach Cathy Reese was named the 2007 ACC Coach of the Year while senior Dana Dobbie was tabbed the Player of the Year.
    • Maryland reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 and had the most wins since 2003.
    • The Terps have opened their season three times in the Bay State before this season, playing Harvard each time in 1987, 1984, and 1980 - all Maryland wins.
    • Maryland is 24-10 all-time in season openers and won eight straight lid lifters from 1990-97.
    • The Terps have won all five meetings against UMass. The two teams have not met since 1990 and this is just the second time that Maryland will play in Amherst.
    • Maryland is 3-0 all-time against Boston College with the last two wins coming by a combined 44-16.
    • The Terps are 26-7 all-time against teams from the state of Massachusetts.

    Terps Ranked In Top Five
    • Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine released their first rankings of the season and IL has the Terps at No. 3 nationally while Lacrosse Magazine lists Maryland fourth.
    • The ACC proves its power yet again as Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina are No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, in the Inside Lacrosse poll.
    • The IWLCA poll lists Maryland at No. 6.

    Well Seasoned
    • Maryland will feature one of the most experienced rosters in the nation in 2008 as 10 seniors are packed onto the team.
    • Only one other team can boast that number and it is Robert Morris of the Northeast Conference.
    • Only five other schools have eight or more seniors on their rosters as Drexel, Iona, LeMoyne, and Oregon all list eight while James Madison currently has nine.
    • Included in the Terps' senior class is:
    Dana Dobbie - 2007 ACC Player of the Year, first team All-American, finalist for Tewaaraton Trophy, tri-captain Kelly Kasper - Two-time All-American, two-time All-ACC, tri-captain Katie Pumphrey - Tri-captain, second year starter on defense Allie Buote - Three-year starter in goal Lauren Cohen - 33 goals, 15 assists in 2007 Casey Magor - 49 goals, 35 assists in last two seasons as a starter Katie Princiotto - 40 goals, 26 assists in last two seasons as a starter

    Diverse, Too
    • Maryland is the only team in the country to have three different countries, excluding the United States, represented on its roster.
    • Senior Casey Magor and freshman Sarah Mollison both represent Australia and were members of the 2005 World Cup championship team. Magor is from Adelaide while Mollison hails from Melbourne.
    • Freshman Laura Merrifield joins the Terps this year from Hertfordshire, England and is a member of the English national team.
    • Senior Dana Dobbie heads north to Ontario, Canada when she needs to go home. She too is a member of her country's national team.

    Scouting The Minutewomen
    • Massachusetts finished 8-9 and went 3-4 in the Atlantic 10 in 2007.
    • UMass is coached by 2003 Maryland graduate Alexis Venechanos who was an All-American as a senior in goal.
    • The Minutewomen return a bulk of their scoring from last season including Kathleen Typadis (52G, 8A), Holly Drown (35G, 6A), Melynda Zwick (27G, 14A), and Jeanette Villapiano (22G, 5A).
    • UMass lost its leading assist producer in Kristina Twichell and all-conference winner Samantha Sepulveda.
    • Lauren McCarthy was also lost to graduation, who started all 17 games in goal last year and was one of the top stoppers in the A-10.
    • UMass opened the season with a 9-5 win against Holy Cross on February 19.
    • Kaytlin McCormick paced the way for the Minutewomen with two goals and two assists while Julie Pasquantonio had two goals and an assist off the bench.
    • Jackie Lyons pitched in with a pair of goals as well and Krissy Anderson had to make just two saves in the cage.

    • Maryland is 5-0 all-time against UMass, but the two teams have not met since 1990.

    Scouting The Eagles
    • Boston College finished 2007 at 6-11 while going 1-4 in their second season in the ACC.
    • BC returns its top two scorers in Jenna McCabe and Lauren Costello. McCabe was the Eagles' only selection to the All-ACC Team with her 38 goals and seven assists while Costello led the team with 36 goals and 11 assists.
    • The Eagles return five players to the midfield while adding six newcomers.
    • Katie Monaghan was BC's starter last year in the cage and she ranked second in the conference in saves per game with 9.29.

    Sister, Sister
    • Maryland's roster featues three sister combinations this season.
    • Freshman Sara Cooper joins older sister Lynne on the squad in 2008. Both are from Ellicott City and graduated from Centennial High School.
    • Freshman Brandi Jones and sister Brittany, a junior, join Maryland this season. The Jones' hail from Poway, Calif. Brittany transferred from Cal Poly where she played club lacrosse and helped her team to a pair of national championships.
    •The final sibling combo on the team is Meredith and Taylor Zanelotti. Meredith is a freshman this year while Taylor is a senior who rejoins the team after not playing in 2007. Both are also from Ellicott City and graduated from River Hill High School.

    Dobbie, Kasper Recognized By Inside Lacrosse
    • Seniors Dana Dobbie and Kelly Kasper were recognized as two of the top 20 players in the country by Inside Lacrosse. The publication listed Dobbie as the No. 3 player in the country while Kasper came in at No. 7.
    • The Terrapins were the only team in the ACC with two players named on the list.
    • Maryland was just one of two teams with two players listed in the top 10. Northwestern had three recognized and four overall. Penn and Notre Dame were the only other programs with multiple players on the list, both with a pair ranked in the top 20.
    • Dobbie racked up numerous awards last season as she was the 2007 ACC Player of the Year, a first team All-American, and a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy. She led the team with 39 ground balls and 79 draw controls and her 3.95 draws per game ranked fourth in the country. Dobbie was also second on the squad with 53 goals and 69 points while forcing 24 turnovers on the defensive end, a number that ranked third on the team.
    • Kasper, a two-time All-American and All-ACC selection, posted 26 goals and 22 assists last year. Her assists ranked second on the team while her 31 caused turnovers were the most for the Terps. Kasper, a dominant presence on both ends of the field, also recorded 28 draw controls and 24 ground balls.
    • The two seniors were named tri-captains for the 2008 season along with fellow classmate Katie Pumphrey.
    • The pair was also named first-team preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse.

    Three Terps Named To US Touring Team
    • Three Maryland women's lacrosse players were named to the United States touring team that will represent the country in the upcoming Prague Cup in the Czech Republic in June. Former Terrapins Quinn Carney and Acacia Walker were named to the roster while sophomore Caitlyn McFadden will serve as an alternate.
    • Maryland is one of three schools in the nation to have three student-athletes named to the 24-woman list. Northwestern has three women on the 18-woman roster while North Carolina has two on the roster and one alternate. A total of seven programs had two women represented on the team.
    • McFadden is the youngest player to be named to the 24-woman list, representing the class of 2010. As one of the top freshman in the country last season, she scored 18 goals and added 17 assists for one of the most potent offenses in the nation. She finished third on the Terps squad with 29 draw controls, fourth with 21 caused turnovers, and fifth with 27 groundballs. McFadden was named to the WomensLacrosse.com All-Rookie Team and was a member of the All-ACC Academic Team.
    • Carney and Walker are two of the best ever to go through the Maryland program. Carney, a 2001 graduate, was a two-time All-American and All-ACC honoree. She won four national championships while in the red and black and was named to the all-time ACC team. Carney ranks third all-time at Maryland with 110 assists, fourth with 272 points, and fifth with 162 goals.
    • Walker, a 2005 graduate, was also a two-time All-American and All-ACC selection. She racked up 108 goals, 77 assists, and 185 points in her collegiate career. Her assist number is tied for eighth all-time at Maryland.

    Reese Makes ACC History In 2007
    • Head coach Cathy Reese, in her first season at the helm of the Terps program, was named the 2007 ACC Coach of the Year. It was the first time in conference history that a mentor earned the award in their first season as head coach.
    • Reese and associate head coach Jen Adams revitalized the Terrapins last season, whose 16 wins were the most since 2003 and who advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.
    • The Terps started the year 13-1 with wins over No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Duke at home.
    • The Maryland offense ranked eighth in the nation last year with 14.25 goals per game.
    • Maryland was perfect at home for the first time since 2001 with a record of 9-0.

    Spot On vs. England
    • The Maryland women's lacrosse team defeated the England national team, 22-7, in exhibition action on Valentine's Day at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terrapins scored 22 times on 30 shots for a 73.3 shooting percentage.
    • Senior Casey Magor led the team with five goals on five shots while adding an assist. Classmate Lauren Cohen had two goals and three assists while Kelly Kasper had a hat trick to go along with a helper. Sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber also added three goals.
    • Senior Katie Princiotto recorded a goal and an assist while sophomore Caitlyn McFadden had a pair of goals on just two shots.
    • Senior Dana Dobbie picked up nine draw controls which equaled the entire England team. Maryland owned a 22-9 advantage in draws.
    • Senior Allie Buote was strong in goal for the Terps, giving up just three goals in almost 40 minutes of action while making four saves.
    • Maryland's seniors combined for 18 of the starting lineup's 24 points.
    • Five newcomers recorded a point in the win with Brittany Jones, junior Kate Faas, and freshman Helen McCutcheon scoring goals. Freshmen Brandi Jones and Colleen Dawson both picked up assists.
