COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Spring practice is in the rearview mirror, but the Maryland football program continues to remain busy.
Here are some past, current and future happenings:
Spring semester finals ended Wednesday and seven current or former Terps are expected to graduate by the end of the summer. That group includes Jeff Allen, Jeff Clement, Phil Costa, Jared Harrell, Travis Ivey, Hakeem Sule and Chris Turner. The University held its main spring graduation ceremony Thursday evening in Comcast Center.
In all 28 members of last year's 30-man senior class are expected to complete their studies by the end of the summer.
Jordan Steffy is serving as the graduation speaker at Wheaton High School on Wednesday, June 3.
Players ended their recent segment of off-season conditioning last week and resume with coach Dwight Galt on Monday, June 1. Classes for Summer Session I also start that day.
Galt and his strength and conditioning staff held the annual Iron Terp Olympics on Monday, May 11. As he does each year, Galt holds the event on the final day of classes. Galt calls it a "fun experience for the guys, something to build camaraderie and team bonding."
Approximately 10 players were placed on 10 different teams. The players competed in lifting exercises as well as a tug of war and a game of ultimate football.
Some highlights from the day included Bruce Campbell posting a personal-best 490-pound bench, which nearly set the all-time program mark (Jamie Wu - 505). Jamarr Robinson set the all-time QB bench press mark at 360 lbs., surpassing Jordan Steffy (355) and Neil O'Donnell (350).
The tug of war was won by Team Six which was led by Stephen St. John (anchor), Justin Gilbert, R.J. Dill, Anthony Green, Kevin Dorsey and Andrew Braxton.
Team One, which was led Robinson, Costa and Adrian Cannon, won the ultimate football game.
Football is in between its two major fund-raisers. The Maryland Gridiron Network, the fund-raising arm of the football program, held its annual Gala & Auction Saturday at the Marriott in Bethesda, Md.
The Ralph Friedgen Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, June 1 at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. Spots remain open. Anyone interested in participating should contact Mike Lynn in the football office. Call 301-314-9057 or send an e-mail
Friedgen is also taking part in next week's Coaches Classic Golf Tournament in California. Many of the Division I football coaches are playing in the charity event which includes rounds at Pebble Beach and Spy Glass.
The 2009 Terrapin Football Technique School kicks off next month. The football camp, which is open to high school players, will have two sessions - June 21-23 and June 24-26. For more information, go to FearTheTerps.com or call the football office at 301-314-7095. Sign up for the camp here.
