POSITION TITLE: Director of Development for Major Gifts - Terrapin Club
DEPARTMENT: Intercollegiate Athletics

UNIVERSITY: The University of Maryland is among the most comprehensive and successful athletic programs in the United States with 27 sports and an annual expense budget of approximately $55 million. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is located on a beautiful campus located eight miles north of the nation's capital and near Columbia, Maryland, which was recently listed as the #4 "Best Place to Live" by Money Magazine. The Athletic Program has won 18 national championships over the last 15 years and is a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Currently, 92 of the University's academic programs are ranked in their respective Top 25 nationally. The Development Unit is located in the 440,000 sq. ft. Comcast Center, built in 2002.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Development for Major Gifts reports to the Associate AD for Terrapin Club, Major Gifts and is one of 15 full-time staff members in athletics development. This individual is responsible for developing key relationships with prospects and donors rated with a giving capacity of $100,000 or more, with a focus on prospects for the new suites at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium, scheduled to open for the 2009 football season. The successful candidate will have a visible role in the athletics development program, working as a member of the senior development team to meet or exceed the fund raising goals for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in Great Expectations: The Campaign for Maryland, the University's $1 billion fund raising effort. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has raised $85 million of their $133 million goal in the campaign for facility improvement, scholarships and special projects. Responsibilities include identifying prospects; creating and implementing cultivation, successful solicitation and stewardship strategies; managing a portfolio of 150-200 prospects and donors; serving as the lead staff person on football suite sales and other campaign components; developing supporting communications and marketing materials; and other duties as assigned. This position involves local and occasional out-of-state travel.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree required. Minimally five years of fundraising experience, with a proven record of achievement. Prefer candidates with previous suite sales experience in addition to development work. Candidate must be a skilled presenter with excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills. Basic computer literacy is required, with experience in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Paciolan preferred. High energy level and the ability to work athletics events during nights and weekends are required.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience.
