The University of Maryland volleyball team concluded play in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Maryland Invitational, falling in three sets to tournament champion Villanova Saturday evening at Comcast Pavilion.
Overall, the Terrapins (2-1) won two of three matches over the weekend to finish second in the event, defeating Stony Brook and Youngstown State earlier.
The Wildcats (3-0) swept the match by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-15. Sophomore Maddi Lee and freshman Kara Bates made the all-tournament team after solid starts to the 2009 season.
Villanova's defense stifled the Terps through much of the match and used several big runs in each set. The Wildcats out-hit the Terps, .272-.125 and had three players notch double-digit kills, including a match-high 14 from Maggie Mergen.
Bates paced the Terps with eight kills, while Lee and Brittney Grove added six apiece. Sophomore Lisa Scott recorded five blocks in a losing effort for Maryland. Grove led Maryland with 12 digs while freshman Sam Rosario finished with 10.
The Terps return to the court next weekend for the Battle of Baltimore, which features four matches against regional rivals. Maryland will face Towson and Navy Friday at Navy. Saturday, Marylands is at Towson to play Morgan State and Loyola (MD).
