Women's Golf Tied for Second after Day One at Cardinal Cup

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The University of Maryland women's golf team is in a second-place tie with Kentucky after the first two rounds of the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup hosted by Louisville at Cardinal Club Golf Course in Simpsonville, Ky.

The Terrapins are 17 over par as a team through 36 holes, shooting 303 and 290. After a 15-over-par first round, the Terps rebounded strongly on the second 18 holes of the day, shooting only 2 over par.

Junior Kerri Connolly was the low scorer of the day for Maryland, shooting 73 and 74 for a cumulative score of 3 over par on the par-72 course. Connolly made eight birdies on the day.

Freshman Christine Shimel finished 4 over par on the day, good for a tie for 16th place. Shimel finished strong with a 1-over-par 73 in round two.

Hayley Brown finished 5 over par and Jessica Hollandsworth is at 8 over. However, Hollandsworth shot 1 under par in the second round, rebounding strongly from a 9-over-par opening round. Lauren Varnas finished the day 14 over par.

The host Louisville Cardinals hold a big lead going into Tuesday's final round after shooting 1 under par on the day.

Cardinal golfers Laura Anderson and Sara-Maude Juneau are tied for first place at 3 under par with Illinois State's Stacey Miller.

The final round tees off Tuesday at 8:15 a.m.
