Strong Outings for Maryland Track

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second meet of the 2010 indoor track and field season sent the men's program to Navy and the women's program to Virginia Tech this weekend. Led by junior Kiani Profit and sophomore Zach Ray, both programs had strong outings. Ray finished second in three events, including an IC4A qualifying mark of 23-8 in the long jump, while Profit made school history in her events.

Zach Ray recorded a time of 8.11 in the 60-meter hurdles, which is the sixth-best mark in school history. Legonn Haskin finished fifth at 8.34 with Chris Parker following in seventh at 8.57.

Maryland tailback Da'Rel Scott placed first in the 60-meter dash at 6.98, which is the ninth-best mark in school history. Floyd Hawkes and Dareem David followed Scott in third and fourth at 7.1 and 7.11 respectively. Hawkes and David also placed third and fifth in the 200-meter dash.

Newcomer Greg Jubb finished first in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:27.74, which places him 7th on Maryland's all-time list. Senior Greg Kelsey followed in second at 2:29.33.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team fell a half of a second short to Rutgers and finished second with a mark of 3:16.75, which is the seventh-best time ever recorded for a Maryland relay team. Relay members Jeremy Samuels and Shawn David also placed second and fifth in the 400.

Tommy Friscia, Max Bruno, Kyle Gaffney and Mike Cator finished third, fifth, seventh and eighth in the 800, while Sumanth Kuppalli, Craig Morgan and Joshua Finkle placed ninth through eleventh in the mile.

Ashley Cromartie, Taylor Bumpas, Julie Fricke and Halsey Sinclair earned ECAC qualification with their time of 12:07.34 in the distance medley relay. Bumpas also finished eighth in the 800 with a mark of 2:13.58, which is the sixth-best mark in Maryland history.

In the 1000-meter run, Christina Nelson recorded the fifth-best time in Maryland history with a mark of 2:54.06. Nelson was followed by senior Erin Matyus in sixth, junior Ashlyn Sinclair in seventh and senior Danielle Karagannis in eleventh. Nelson also recorded the eighth-best time in the 3000 with a mark of 9:57.43, which earned her seventh place.

Freshman Arielle Statham scored a 38-1.5 in the triple jump, which is the ninth-best mark ever recorded by a Maryland student-athlete. Freshman Moriah Young also made her mark on the field, earning eighth and ninth honors in the weight throw and shot put.

Natalie Goodman recorded a mark of 40.99 in the 300, which places the senior tenth on the all-time list for the University of Maryland. Melony McKay also made school history, recording a ninth-best time of 56.98 in the 400.

Junior Kiani Profit topped her career-best time in the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.52, which is the second-best time for that event in Maryland history. Profit also made history in the long jump with a mark of 19-9.5, which is the fourth-best long jump ever by a Terrapin. Joined by Melony McKay, Tolulope Olugbemi and Arielle Statham, Profit finished her day with a third place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. Head coach Andrew Valmon felt the relay was "a fitting way to end a solid weekend."

Maryland Notes:

In the 1000, Jeff Dickson and Ben Diestel finished ninth and tenth with times of 2:35.98 and 2:37.36 respectively. In the 3000, Chris Conway placed eighth at 8:54.37, followed by Kevin Gahr in tenth at 9:07.24. Joshua Finkle, Craig Morgan, Sumanth Kuppalli and Jeff Dickson finished third in the 4x800-meter relay at 8:14.07. In the long jump, Jarenn Stewart finished fourth at 22-11.25 and John Davenport finished seventh at 21-11. Davenport also placed seventh in the 60-meter dash at 7.16. Sam Wuest placed fifth in the high jump with a mark of 6-2.25. Calvin Wheeler placed seventh with a mark of 1:09.05 in the 500. Lucile Cancre finished eighth in the high jump and Kristin Battas finished tenth in the weight throw. Ashlyn and Halsey Sinclair finished twentieth and twenty-first in the mile. Christy Goldmann recorded times of 1:38.69 in the 600 and 2:18.18 in the 800. Senior Kelley Pry finished twenty-fifth in the 800 and junior Heidi Paul placed thirtieth in the 200.
