The Terrapins (16-7) and Cavaliers (14-8) are attempting to keep pace with the leaders in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, playing each other in the first of two regular-season meetings this season.
Maryland, which is 8-3 since the calendar changed to 2010, is coming off a 77-56 loss at Duke on Saturday. The Terps are in the midst of a stretch that has them playing three games in five days and four games in eight days. After Monday's game, the Terrapins travel on Tuesday to Raleigh for a 9 p.m. matchup at NC State on Wednesday, then return home to play Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. Saturday. Maryland also has Clemson coming to town on Feb. 24.

The Terps are in fourth place in the league with a 6-3 record, one game ahead of Virginia, which is 5-4 in ACC play. The Terps and Cavs are trailing Duke (9-2), Wake Forest (8-3) and Virginia Tech (7-3) in the league standings. With a victory over the Cavaliers, Maryland could tie Virginia Tech for third place heading into Tuesday's play.
Senior guard Greivis Vasquez recently set a school record for 3-point field goal attempts. Vasquez comes into Monday's play with 623, more than the 615 by Juan Dixon from 1999-2002. Vasquez also recently became the third Terrapin in history with 200 3-pointers and now sits with 207, trailing only Dixon's 239 in the Maryland record books.
Vasquez is averaging 20.0 points per game in league play this season and is fourth in the ACC in scoring with an 18.0 ppg average overall. Vasquez comes into Monday's game among the league leaders in scoring, free-throw percentage, steals, 3-pointers per game, assist-turnover ratio and minutes played. He leads the league in assists with a 6.2 apg average, just ahead of Larry Drew II of North Carolina and Ishmael Smith of Wake Forest, who each average 6.1 helpers per game.
Vasquez now is the only Terrapin in history with 600 rebounds and 700 assists. He has scored in double figures in 19 straight games.
Junior guard Cliff Tucker had a solid performance Saturday against Duke. The junior from El Paso scored a dozen points, hitting 5 of 13 from the floor. He has scored in double figures five times this season, including three times since having a season-high 14 points at Boston College on Jan. 16.
Maryland continues to be one of the top defensive teams in the country, ranked in the top 10 in defensive field-goal percentage. Maryland has allowed its opponents to hit just .373 from the floor, and has held seven of its last eight opponents under 40 percent shooting in a game.
Since starting its league schedule with a 3-0 record, Virginia has gone 2-4 in its last six games. Two of those losses have come at home in overtime (Virginia Tech and Wake Forest). The Cavaliers lost 61-55 at Virginia Tech in their last outing on Saturday despite a double-double from Mike Scott, who had 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Sylven Landesburg leads Virginia in scoring (18.0 ppg) and in assists with 63. The sophomore has already hit 105 free throws this season and is shooting 83 percent from the foul line this year. Scott is the only other Virginia player averaging in double figures at 13.4 points per game. He leads the Cavs on the boards with 7.7 rebounds per game (9th in the ACC).
Sharp-shooting sophomore Sammy Zeglinski is battling with Maryland's Eric Hayes for the top spot in the league in 3-point shooting accuracy. Zeglinski has hit .425 from behind the arc this season, while Hayes comes into tonight's game hitting .452 from 3-point range. Zeglinski has hit 48 treys this season in 22 games.
