KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -
Freshman Christine Shimel continues to lead the Terrapins at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. She carded another one-over-par 73 on day two of tournament play.
Shimel's best performance came on hole four where she went two-under-par for her first eagle of the season. She remained under par until the 18th hole of the Oak Point course. Shimel improved her position by seven spots to end day two tying for No. 9.
This is the first of five tournaments this spring season for Maryland. The tournament stretches through Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Clubs. Thirty-five teams will participate in the tournament, only one other from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Miami.
Freshman Hayley Brown recorded an eight-over-par 80 during her second round. Her top performances came on the first hole where she met par and on hole 12 which she birdied. Brown ended Monday's play tied for 74th.
Senior Carly Hunt shaved two strokes off her game from yesterday with a 78 and finished tied with teammate Brown at No. 74. Junior Kerri Connolly ended the day tied for 84th after carding a six-over-par 80. Connolly had two birdies during the course, on the first and final holes.
Sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth withdrew from the tournament after a five-over-par 77 performance the day before.
Only three players are under par including tournament leader, Crystal Reeves from Oral Roberts University. Reeves used a par round yesterday and a four-under-par 68 today to advance seven spots. Augusta State remains the leader after two days with a 15-over-par 591.
Teams and individuals have a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. ET tomorrow for the final day of play.
Four members of the Terps rank top-25 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after fall play: No. 5 Hollandsworth, No. 14 Shimel, No. 16 Connolly and No. 24 Brown. Varnas comes in at No. 30. Hunt ranks top-10 amongst ACC individuals who played 10 or fewer rounds.
Maryland earned five top-10 finishes in the fall, tying Boston College for the most amongst ACC schools. The Terps were also one of only four other conference programs claiming tournament titles.
In two weeks the Terps take part in the Administaff Lady Jaguar Invitational in Augusta, Ga., on March 7-8. Later in the month they go to Southern Pines, N.C., for the Pinehurst Challenge and are accompanied by ACC opponent's Florida State and N.C. State. The tournament runs through March 22-23.
Just before the ACC Championship takes place, Maryland goes to host school Miami's Canes and Cardinal Classic in Miami Lakes, Fla., on April 5-6. The conference championship tournament extends from April 16-18 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
NCAA regional tournaments tee off on May 6-8 and conclude with the championship May 18-21. Regional's will be held at one of three locations, Greenville, S.C. (East), Stanford, Calif. (West) and Bloomington, Ind. (Central). The Championship is in Wilmington, N.C., at the Country Club of Landfall.
