Maryland freshman women's golfer Christine Shimel (73-73-79-225) closed out the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in a tie for No. 22 and leading the Terrapins.
Shimel, who led the Terps after the first day with a one-over-par 73, had a repeat performance on Monday and moved up the leader board to No. 9. The Kennett Square, Pa., native birdied five holes and carded an eagle on the second day of play. Shimel had her best performances on the front nine of each day.
Senior Kerri Connolly (79-80-78-237) improved her game by two strokes today and finished with a six-over-par 78. She remained even throughout the first nine on today's course and ended the tournament tied for 81st, four spots ahead of yesterday. Teammate Carly Hunt (80-78-79-237) matched Connolly's total score after three days of competition.
Hayley Brown (78-80-82-240) had her best day on Sunday and being just one-over-par after playing the front nine.
Sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth (75-73) resumed play today and improved her score from Sunday by two strokes. After starting on the third hole on day three, Hollandsworth eagled the next and birdied on the 18th.
In two weeks the Terps take part in the Administaff Lady Jaguar Invitational in Augusta, Ga., on March 7-8. Later in the month they go to Southern Pines, N.C., for the Pinehurst Challenge and are accompanied by ACC opponent's Florida State and N.C. State. The tournament runs through March 22-23.
Just before the ACC Championship takes place, Maryland goes to host school Miami's Canes and Cardinal Classic in Miami Lakes, Fla., on April 5-6. The conference championship tournament extends from April 16-18 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
NCAA regional tournaments tee off on May 6-8 and conclude with the championship May 18-21. Regional's will be held at one of three locations, Greenville, S.C. (East), Stanford, Calif. (West) and Bloomington, Ind. (Central). The Championship is in Wilmington, N.C., at the Country Club of Landfall.
