The University of Maryland track and field program celebrated eleven first place finishes at the Maryland Invitational this Saturday. The women's program placed first overall and the men took second.
All-American Kiani Profit posted ECAC qualifying marks and took first place honors in three events. In her first meet of the 2010 outdoor season, the star junior won the long jump with a mark of 19-00.05. The multi-athlete anchored the 4x400-meter relay team to victory in 3:47.27 and finished the 400-meter hurdles in 59.17, followed by Melony McKay in second place at 1:03.06.
Greg Kelsey crushed the competition in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, earning first place and IC4A qualification. The senior finished the run in 9:11.02, well under the IC4A qualifying time of 9:15.
Legonn Haskins took first place and qualified for the IC4A meet in the 110-meter hurdles. The junior hustled across the finish line in 14.83 seconds.
Junior Kyle Gaffney led all runners in the 5,000-meter run. The Silver Spring-native took first place with a mark of 15:12.85, finishing three and a half seconds ahead of the competition.
Anchored by DeAnna Brown, the women's 4x100-meter relay team took first place and earned ECAC qualification with their mark of 47.35. Brown won the event with Arielle Statham, Alexis Booker and Heidi Paul.
Lucile Cancre and Betsy Dempsey took top honors in the high jump. Both athletes recorded a jump of 5-01.75 in the finals, but Cancre edged Dempsey in a jump off with a mark of 5-01.25, earning first place.
Greg Jubb and Tommy Friscia led all runners in the 800-meter run, taking first and second place at 1:51.92 and 1:52.13. Greg Kelsey and Mike Cator crossed the finish line shortly after in sixth and eighth place at 1:55.77 and 1:56.37.
Kelley Pry, Christina Nelson and Ashley Cromartie dominated the 800-meter run, placing first, second and fourth at 2:12.06, 2:12.34 and 2:16.08 respectively.
Kristen Batts took first overall in the discus with a mark of 153-09, a personal record that puts her fourth on Maryland's all-time list in the event.
Three Terrapin women qualified for the ECAC meet in the 100-meter dash. Alexis Booker took second place at 12.29, and Heidi Paul and Arielle Statham placed fifth and seventh at 12.61 and 12.73.
In the 4x400-meter relay, John Davenport, Shawn David, Tommy Friscia and Jeremy Samuels took second place at 3:15.62 behind a talented unattached squad, which included Maryland track alumnus Adam Durham. The men's relay team qualified for IC4A competition with their effort this weekend.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Ashley Hendrix finished two hundredths of a second behind first place, earning second place with a mark of 15.04.
In the 1,500, Julie Fricke and Erin Matyus took third and fifth with marks of 4:40.10 and 4:41.65 respectively. Both marks are season-bests for the student-athletes.
Sprinter Tolulope Olugbemi ran 400 meters in 57.89 seconds, earning third place in the competition. Natalie Goodman took ninth place at 1:00.43.
Moriah Young threw the eighth-best shot put in Maryland history at 45-07.25. The freshman placed third in the field event.
Arielle Statham took third place in the triple jump with a mark of 37-03.25.
In the 200-meter dash, DeAnna Brown and Tolulope Olugbemi finished in fourth and fifth place, completing the event in 25.40 and 25.54 seconds.

In the 4x400-relay, the `C' team (Erin Matyus, Christina Nelson, Ashley Cromartie, Kelley Pry) placed fifth at 4:02.34, the `D' team (Ashlyn Sinclair, Christy Goldmann, Ashley Campbell, Halsey Sinclair) placed eleventh in 4:14.79, and the `B' team (Alexis Booker, Ashley Hendrix, Natalie Goodman, Tolulope Olugbemi) placed thirteenth at 4:21.41.
In the high jump, Camilla Nichols took sixth with a mark of 4-11.75.
In the 800, Erin Matyus, Ashlyn Sinclair and Christy Goldmann placed seventh through ninth at 2:19.15, 2:20.89 and 2:21.31. Ashley Campbell finished twelfth with a mark of 2:22.17.
In the 1,500, Ashlyn Sinclair and Ashley Campbell placed seventh and ninth with marks of 4:46.26 and 4:47.25.
In the hammer throw, Kristen Batts and Jessie Echard finished in seventh and eighth place with throws of 152-11 and 152-05.
In the 3,000, Andrea Rothschild placed seventh at 10:26.40, Danielle Karagannis placed ninth at 10:31.58, Angeli Sivaraman placed tenth at 10:31.83, and Anna Roth finished twenty-first at 11:20.90.
In the 5,000, Halsey Sinclair placed tenth with a mark of 19:26.55.
In the javelin throw, Tara Miluszewski and Kiani Profit took tenth and eleventh place with throws of 109-10 and 109-05.
In the 200, Ashley Hendrix, Natalie Goodman and Heidi Paul placed eleventh, thirteenth and fifteenth with marks of 26.00, 26.19 and 26.36 respectively.
In the discus throw, Jessie Echard placed twelfth with a mark of 122-10 and Alexandra Georgiou placed sixteenth with a mark of 113-11.
Men's:
In the 4x400-meter relay, the `B' team (Dareem David, Calvin Wheeler, Chris Brown, Max Bruno) placed fourth at 3:22.03, the `C' team (Josh Finkler, Ben Diestel, Greg Kelsey, Greg Jubb) placed eleventh at 3:36.45, and the `D' team (Sumanth Kuppalli, Chris Conway, Kyle Gaffney, Mike Cator) placed twelfth at 3:37.41.
In the 3,000, Alex Lundy finished in fifth place at 8:29.85.
In the 400, Shawn David placed fifth at 49.74. John Davenport, Chris Brown and Zach Ray placed seventh, eighth and tenth at 49.89, 50.10 and 50.13. Calvin Wheeler crossed the finish line in twentieth place at 51.55.
In the 4x100-meter relay, Legonn Haskins, Floyd Hawkes, John Davenport and Dareem David took fifth place with a mark of 43.21.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Zach Ray placed sixth with a mark of 54.86. Legonn Haskins took fourteenth place in 58.72 seconds.
In the 1,500, Mike Cator and Josh Finkle took sixth and ninth with marks of 3:59.54 and 4:04.85.
In the 200, Jeremy Samuels and Floyd Hawkes crossed the finish line in seventh and eighth place with marks of 22.70 and 22.81. Chris Parker took twenty-fourth at 23.94.
In the 800, Max Bruno placed eleventh at 1:57.73, Ben Diestel finished thirteenth at 1:58.63, Craig Morgan placed fifteenth at 1:58.84, Jeff Dickson placed nineteenth at 1:59.61, and Josh Finkle finished twentieth at 1:59.94.
Dwight Barbiasz did not compete in the high jump.
