GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Maryland will travel to Penn State on Dec. 1, 2010 for its matchup in the 12th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by Dick's Sporting Goods.
The matchup will have the teams meeting for the first time since March 19, 1990, when Maryland traveled to State College, Pa., for an 80-78 loss in the National Invitation Tournament. The Terrapins lead the all-time men's basketball series between the schools, 8-7.
The last time Maryland made a regular-season trip to State College was in 1967. The teams played at Hershey, Pa., in three straight seasons (1977-79), and played neutral-site games in 1982 (Baltimore) and 1983 (Hershey).
Maryland is coming off a 24-9 season in which it shared the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship. The Terrapins reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, losing on a buzzer-beater to Michigan State.
Penn State was 11-20 overall last season and finished 11th in the Big Ten with a 3-15 record.
The Terrapins have won five straight games in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with its last loss coming to Wisconsin in 2004. Since then, Maryland has defeated Minnesota, Illinois twice, Michigan and Indiana. The Terps beat the Hoosiers, 80-68, in Bloomington, Ind., in last year's Challenge.
Last year, the Big Ten won the Challenge for the first time in the 11-year history of the series. Seven of the games were decided by seven points or less, with the Big Ten winning the series, 6-5.
