Day 1 Results
STANFORD, Calif. -
The Maryland women's golf team concluded the first day of competition at the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship West Regional in Stanford, Calif. Freshman Hayley Brown led the Terrapins with a 78 and two birdies.
Maryland is currently in 21st with a team total of 316. Virginia and Arizona are currently tied for first place.
The Stanford Golf Course is a 71-par, 6,103 yard course. The West Regional field is made up of UCLA, Alabama, Arizona, Ohio State, Virginia, Stanford, LSU, California, Texas A&M, Texas, UC Davis, Arkansas, UNLV, San Jose State, San Francisco, Idaho, UC Irvine, Iowa State, Colorado State, Oral Roberts, Texas State, Pennsylvania and Portland State.
Fellow freshman Christine Shimel is just behind Brown by one stroke with a 79. Junior Kerri Connolly also carded an eight-over-par 79. Shimel used two birdies on the back nine while Connolly registered three, two on holes seven and eight and one on hole 16.
Rounding out the lineup for the Terps at the tournament are senior Carly Hunt and sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth. Hunt carded an 80 and Hollandsworth tallied an 81.
Teams will tee off on holes No. 1 and No. 10 all three days beginning at 8:00 a.m. The last tee time is scheduled for 2:09 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday and 2:11 p.m. on Friday. Teams will play 18 holes each day.
Maryland last played in the NCAA regional tournament in 2007 as a team. Last season Hollandsworth made the cut as an individual finishing tied for 11th at the East Regional in Gainesville, Fla. The then-freshman carded a seven-over-par 217 (76-71-70) on the Mark Bostick Golf Course.

Three regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition, and all national championships policies will apply.
A total of 369 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.
The championships finals will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall and will be hosted by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
