COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
No. 5 seed Maryland will make its 10th straight appearance in the third round when it plays host to No. 12 Louisville at 5 p.m. Sunday in the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
The Terps (14-3-3) picked up a hat trick from College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week Casey Townsend last Sunday to lift Maryland past West Virginia, 4-0.
Louisville (13-6-2) defeated Bradley 3-2 in double overtime to punch its ticket to the third round. The Cardinals are outscoring their opponents 36-16 this season.

Scouting The Terps
·The Terps (14-3-3) picked up a hat trick from College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week Casey Townsend against the Mountaineers last Sunday to lift the Terps to their 10th straight third round appearance.
· The Terps are led on offense by 2011 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list selection Casey Townsend and his sophomore counterpart Patrick Mullins. Towsend, a Traverse City, Mich., native, captured first team All-ACC honors for the second consecutive season in 2011. He has a career-high 16 goals through 20 matches. The 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year, Mullins, a second team all-conference pick this season, has six goals and has also dished two assists for 14 points.
· John Stertzer, who joined Townsend as a Maryland representative on the ACC's first team, has tallied 14 goals, including five game-winners and three multi-goal performances. Helge Leikvang and Sunny Jane have sealed up the remainder of the midfield with rookie Dan Metzger earning significant playing time as the first player off the bench. Jane, a second team all-conference selection, leads the Terps with eight assists. Jereme Raley and Kaoru Forbess have split time in the fourth starting midfielder slot.
·Taylor Kemp returns for his third season as a starter at outside back and, along with senior captain Alex Lee, have led a dynamic defensive effort through 20 games. Widner Saint Cyr and London Woodberry have been solid as well. Maryland is surrendering a mere 0.90 goals per contest. They have allowed only 68 shots on goal all season. Both Kemp and Woodberry garnered second team all-conference honors in 2011.
· Redshirt senior Will Swaim has started every match but three at goalkeeper, replacing three-year starter and current Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath. Keith Cardona started in goal Maryland's last time out against West Virginia.

Scouting The Cardinals
· Louisville (13-6-2) defeated Bradley 3-2 in double overtime to punch its ticket to the third round. The Cardinals are outscoring their opponents 36-16 this season.
· The Cardinals rely on a balanced attack with eight players recording at least two goals in 2011. Louisville is led by Colin Rolfe (8g, 7a) and Nick DeLeon (5g, 6a). Andre Boudreaux boasts a 0.74 goals against average in 21 starts with 58 saves. Nearly 2/3 of Louisville's goals (23) have come in the second half.
· Louisville, a participant in last year's College Cup, faced a challenging slate in 2011, tackling nine nationally ranked opponents. The Cards went 3-6 in those matches with wins over UCLA, Indiana, and Providence.
· This is the second meeting between the two programs with Maryland leading the all-time series 1-0.

Townsend Lifts #5 Terps to NCAA Third Round

Casey Townsend tallied a hat trick as No. 5 seed Maryland scored three second half goals to defeat West Virginia 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
· The Terps' recent offensive woes were all but an afterthought as they outshot West Virginia 19-5 to advance to the third round for the 10th consecutive season.
· Freshman Keith Cardona went relatively untested in his third career start in net as the Maryland defense held West Virginia to a mere one shot on goal. Cardona has yet to concede a goal this season.
Townsend Named National Player of the Week Again

Casey Townsend was named College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week for his superb effort against West Virginia Sunday.
· The Traverse City, Mich., native tacked on his second hat trick of the season with three against the Mountaineers Sunday in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
Terps Tab League-Best Six to All-ACC Team
· The Maryland men's soccer team placed a league-high six student-athletes on the 2011 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Team, announced Thursday.
· Senior Casey Townsend was tabbed to the first team for a second consecutive season. He joins junior John Stertzer as the Terps' first team representatives. Sophomores Sunny Jane and Patrick Mullins and juniors Taylor Kemp and London Woodberry were tabbed to the second team.
Jane the Playmaker
· Sophomore
Sunny Jane finally netted his first goal of the year in a lively contest against Duke, halting a 22-game scoreless drought dating back to Oct. 16 of last season.
· Despite the lack of goals, Jane has been incredibly involved with the offense in 2011, leading the team in assists. Jane has tallied a career-best eight assists this season, a team-best average of 0.33 per game.
Former Terp Gonzalez Named Top MLS Defender
·Former Maryland All-American defender Omar Gonzalez can add MLS Defender of the Year to his growing résumé.
· Gonzalez started 29 games at center back for Bruce Arena's L.A. Galaxy in 2011, his third-straight season as a starter after being drafted out of Maryland with the third pick in the 2009 SuperDraft. The Galaxy defeated Houston last Sunday night for the MLS Cup title.
#3 Terps Battle to 1-1 Tie at #2 UNC
·
The No. 3 Maryland men's soccer team put forth a valiant effort at No. 2 North Carolina, escaping with a 1-1 tie to stay atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
· John Stertzer tallied his 12th goal of the season in the 51st minute to spark the Terps to a crucial tie on the road with two conference games remaining. Maryland thwarted one of the nation's most potent offenses, despite playing a man-down for nearly 50 minutes. Will Swaim led a stellar defensive showing with a season-high seven saves.
#3 Terps Trounce #22 Duke, 4-2
· The No. 3 Maryland men's soccer team displayed its offensive prowess in front of a Ludwig Field record crowd as the Terrapins defeated No. 22 Duke, 4-2.
· The Terps, who played in front of 7,957 fans and were welcomed with fireworks, scored three second half goals, including two from John Stertzer, to best one of their ACC rivals and advance to 13-1-1 and 4-1-0 in the conference on the season despite being a man down for the game's final 23 minutes.
18 and Counting!
· With a 14-3-3 record through 20 games, Maryland has clinched yet another winning season - its 18th consecutive.
· Prior to this season, Maryland averaged 15.7 wins per season since 1994. The Terps have had three 20+ win seasons in that span and have eclipsed the 15-victory mark 10 times.
Sure-Fire Stertzer
·
Junior midfielder
John Stertzer has been shooting with lights-out proficiency this season, nailing 14 of the 30 shots he has taken.
· Stertzer is shooting at .467 clip, while his shots on goal percentage is a staggering .667.
Protect This House
· Maryland is tremendous at its home venue, Ludwig Field, boasting a 168-36-14 record since the facility was built in 1995.
· The Terps have not lost more than two games at home in a season since 2001, recording a 102-11-10 record in the last 10 years.
Chart-Topping Terps
· The Terps rank seventh nationally in total goals this season, racking up 46.
· Maryland is also fourth in scoring offense.
Lovin' Ludwig!
· There are few venues in all of college athletics quite like the always-raucous Ludwig Field on the campus of the University of Maryland.
· This season, Maryland is averaging 4,223 fans per game and boast three of the top ten single-game attendance figures in the nation. Excluding football and men's basketball, only three other Division I programs in any sport in the area outdrew the Terps' soccer program on average during the 2010-11 school year.
Townsend Named National Player of the Week

Casey Townsend was tabbed the NSCAA and
Soccer America National Player of the Week after leading No. 2 Maryland to wins against Charlotte and Creighton.
· The senior, who was also named ACC Player of the Week, scored two goals on the week, one each against Charlotte and Creighton.
Terps Top #2 Creighton for Marquee Win
· Casey Townsend's goal in the 14th minute was all the No. 3 Terrapins needed to remain undefeated on the season as they upended previously unbeaten and second-ranked Creighton, 1-0, before a big crowd at Ludwig Field.
·The Maryland defense was strong throughout the 90 minutes, holding the Bluejays without a shot until the 48th minute of play.
Stingy Terps
· The Maryland defense, despite losing three starters - including current MLS standouts Ethan White and Zac MacMath - from last season, has been fantastic in 2011, giving up a mere 0.90 goals per game.
· The Terps have held 15 of 20 teams they faced this season to one goal or less.
Terps Grind Out Win vs. #12 Charlotte
· Three first half strikes in a span of 12 minutes propelled the No. 3 Maryland men's soccer team past No. 12 Charlotte, 3-1.
· Casey Townsend and John Stertzer scored two of the Terrapin goals, while Charlotte added the third on an own goal for Maryland.
Three-Headed Maryland Monster
· Junior John Stertzer, senior Casey Townsend and sophomore Patrick Mullins have combined to total 35 of Maryland's 46 goals this season.
· Stertzer, a native of Oakton, Va., has tallied 14 scores, including five game-winners. Townsend has also tallied 16 goals, including hat tricks against West Virginia and at UMBC. Mullins, last year's ACC Freshman of the Year, has six goals in 2011, including two against No. 8 Boston College.

Stertzer's Time to Shine

John Stertzer is in the middle of a breakout season for Maryland.

The midfielder boasts 14 goals this season, more than triple his career mark (4) entering the 2011 campaign.
· He has tallied three multi-goal showings, including a pair on his 21st birthday against Rutgers and two against Duke.
Townsend Climbs the Charts

Casey Townsend has recorded 42 goals in his decorated four-year career at Maryland.
· The senior is currently tied for fourth all-time in Maryland men's soccer history in career goals. He needs one more to move into the top three.

Maryland Soccer on Display in Stanford Win
· The Terps needed only 22 seconds to net their first of four goals in a 4-0 rout of Stanford in front of 7,178 fans at Ludwig Field.
· The crowd, which ranked as the second most in Ludwig Field history, and a live Fox Soccer Channel audience were treated to four first half goals by the Terps, including two from senior Casey Townsend.
· The four first half goals were the most for the Terrapins since scoring four on September 15, 2009 against Duquesne in a 7-0 drubbing. Ironically, Townsend scored two first half goals in that match as well.
Mullins Snags ACC Player of the Week Nod
· Patrick Mullins was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Co-Player of the Week after tallying two goals against No. 8 Boston College.
· Mullins led Maryland to its first 5-0 start since 2004 with his first career two-goal outing in a 4-0 rout of the Eagles.
· The sophomore forward netted the second and third goals in the Terps' victory over BC. He was also named to both the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week.

· The winningest head coach in Maryland men's soccer annals, Sasho Cirovski returns for his 19th season at the helm of the prestigious Terp program. Here are just a few of his highlights with the Terps.

Townsend Earns Preseason Honors
· Casey Townsend earned two lofty national preseason honors. The senior was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and garnered College Soccer News Preseason All-America honors.
· Townsend was tabbed to the initial 42-player list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the top individual honor in college soccer. A senior from Traverse City, Mich., the 2010 First Team All-ACC pick is Maryland's top returning scorer after tallying nine goals as a junior.
· Townsend was also named a College Soccer News Second Team Preseason All-American.
ACC Freshman of the Year Returns for Terps
· Sophomore Patrick Mullins was tabbed ACC Freshman of the Year in 2010 after appearing in 21 games and registering 14 points.
· As a midfielder, Mullins was also a TopDrawerSoccer All-Rookie second team pick.
· The New Orleans, La., product will move up to a striker position in 2011, accompanying Casey Townsend and replacing four-year starter Jason Herrick.
From College Park to the MLS
· Maryland had another banner day at the 2011 MLS SuperDraft with three student-athletes being selected.
· Zac MacMath was selected by the Philadelphia Union with the fifth overall pick. Billy Cortes (38th - NYRB) and Jason Herrick (45th - Chicago) were also taken in the draft. Underclassmen Matt Kassel and Ethan White later signed homegrown deals with New York and D.C.
Terps Land Top Recruit
· Incoming freshman Alex Shinsky heads to Maryland as TopDrawerSoccer.com's No. 1-rated recruit in 2011. The midfielder is also the No. 2-ranked recruit in the nation by College Soccer News.
· Shinsky is a member of U-17 U.S. National Team where he scored a goal for the U.S. U-17 National Team in the FIFA World Cup in Malawi.
Will The Thrill
· Redshirt senior Will Swaim enters the 2011 season atop the depth chart at goalkeeper after serving as a reserve to All-American Zac MacMath for three seasons.
· Swaim began his career at Maryland as a starter during his freshman season and has made a valiant return to a starting role in 2011, giving up only 18 goals in 17 games thus far.
Fan Friendly Ludwig Field
· The Maryland men's soccer team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to Ludwig Field season after season. Heading into this season, more than 325,000 fans have filled the stands to take in exciting Terrapin soccer action since the facility opened in 1995.
· The Terps set a Ludwig Field record Oct. 14, 2011 when 7,957 fans watched Maryland defeat Duke on a perfect College Park night set with fireworks. Maryland is averaging over 4,000 fans per game in 2011.
