ATHENS, Ga. -
The Maryland softball team fell 1-0 to Iowa Friday afternoon in its opening game of the 2011 season. The Terps are playing in the Red & Black Showcase, which is hosted by No. 3 Georgia.
Junior Kendra Knight started in the circle for the Terrapins. She allowed just two hits in her six innings of work. In the fourth inning, Iowa's Liz Watkins hit a home run to center field to score the game's only run.
Knight notched nine strikeouts and allowed just one walk.
Freshman Candice Beards got her first collegiate hit as a pinch hitter in the fifth inning when she singled through the right side.
Senior Marisha Branson got the Terrapin offense going in the top of the second, when she led off with a single. Two batters later, senior Kerry Hickey walked with one out. Senior Marybeth Herrick reached on a fielder's choice that got Branson, but junior Sloane Van Meter walked to load the bases with two outs. The Terps left three on base.
One inning later, junior Kathy McLaughlin walked and junior Vangie Galindo followed with a bunt single. They advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Then, McLaughlin was called out at home on a fielder's choice.
Junior Bree Hanafin, Beards, Branson and Galindo all had hits in the game.
The Terps will play two 2010 NCAA Regionals teams Saturday. They will play Illinois State at 5 p.m. and Lipscomb at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Maryland will play East Carolina at 11 a.m. and No. 3 Georgia at 1 p.m. Gametracker live stats will be available for all games.
