BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Maryland softball team won both of its games Saturday morning in the Strike Out Cancer Tournament, hosted by Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. The Terps (5-4) defeated Connecticut 3-1 before edging Jacksonville 2-1 in extra innings.
In Saturday's first game, freshman Ashley Czechner allowed just one run over six innings.
Junior Kathy McLaughlin got the ball rolling for Maryland in the third when she tripled down the left field line. Sophomore Sara Acosta drove McLaughlin home with an RBI single to give the Terps the 1-0 lead.
Maryland struck again in the fifth when Acosta opened the inning with a single into left.
Two batters later, senior Kerry Hickey doubled, bringing in the second Terrapin run. After Connecticut scored its first run thanks to an Amy Vaughan RBI, the Terps extended the lead back to two with an RBI triple by McLaughlin.
Hickey relieved Czechner in the bottom of the seventh and earned three straight outs, giving Maryland the 3-1 win.
Against the Dolphins of Jacksonville, Maryland earned its second extra-inning win on the weekend thanks to Branson's RBI single to right center field.
Junior Kendra Knight allowed just one run in the 11 a.m. game, striking out eight and giving up just two total hits in the eight-inning complete game win.
The Terrapins will play Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. in the tournament's championship game. Maryland defeated the Panthers 1-0 in extra innings on Friday.
