BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Maryland softball team topped Pittsburgh 5-4 on Sunday afternoon to win the Strike Out Cancer Tournament, hosted by Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. The Terps (6-4) finished the weekend on a three-game winning streak.
After trailing 2-1, junior Kathy McLaughlin singled to open the second inning and was then joined by junior Vangie Galindo who singled through the left side. Sophomore Sara Acosta reached base on an error which allowed McLaughlin to score and tie the game at two runs apiece.
Seniors Marisha Branson and Bree Hanafin hit a pair of singles to double-up the Panthers before senior Kerry Hickey's ground out to third scored senior Lauren Ghent, giving Maryland five runs, all it would need in Sunday's championship game.
On the mound, Hickey provided the Terps with three strong innings in which she gave up just three hits and one earned run. Junior Kendra Knight and freshman Ashley Czechner came on in relief to keep the Panthers scoreless from the fourth inning on.
Maryland will resume play on Mar. 4 when the team travels back south to Orlando, Fla. to keep in the Disney Wide World of Sports Invitational. The Terps will begin the tournament at 12:30 p.m. on Friday when they challenge the Illinois State Redbirds.
