TAMPA, Fla. -
The Maryland softball team went 1-1 Friday in day one of the University of South Florida's Under Armour Showcase in Tampa, Fla. The Terps (10-9) fell to No. 16 Nebraska 6-4 in the first game of the day and beat Colorado State 6-0 Friday night.
Sophomore Lexi Carroll led the Terrapins offensively, as she had three hits on the day, including a home run against the Huskers and a double and two RBI vs. the Rams. Juniors Bree Hanafin and Vangie Galindo also had three-hit days.
Freshman Ashley Czechner started in the circle against Colorado State. She notched 14 strikeouts in her 7.0 innings and gave up just three hits and one walk.
In the bottom of the first with Galindo on third, senior Kerry Hickey reached on a Colorado State error that scored Galindo. Carroll doubled to score a second run, then junior Kathy McLaughlin doubled to bring in a third run.
Hickey added two more runs in the bottom of the second with a two-RBI double. With Hickey on third, Carroll flied out to center field and Hickey scored on the throw.
Hickey started in the circle against the Huskers. Nebraska took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off of two base hits. They added a second run in the top of the second off of an illegal pitch by Hickey that advanced a runner from third.
Hanafin put the Terps on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to centerfield. Nebraska answered with another run in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Carroll led off with a home run to left field to cut the score to 3-2.
In the top of the sixth, Nebraska scored three runs off of four hits and a Terrapin error to take a 6-2 lead.
Maryland rallied in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore Sara Acosta and Galindo both hit back-to-back RBI singles with two outs to finalize the score at 6-4.
Hickey ended her 7.0 innings in the circle with four strikeouts, a walk, six hits and three earned runs.
Maryland will play St. John's Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and St. Joseph's at 3 p.m. All available live stats and media links for this weekend's games will be posted on umterps.com.
After this weekend, Maryland will return home this week to play host to Fordham in a doubleheader beginning Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Rams came to College Park last May for the NCAA Regionals.
