CLEARWATER, Fla. -
The Maryland softball team pulled out two nail-biting wins Saturday in their third and fourth games in this weekend's Under Armour Showcase at USF.
The Terps (12-9) beat St. John's 4-3 off of a Lexi Carroll sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one. In the second game, Bree Hanafin jumpstarted a four-run eighth inning with a single to left for a 4-1 win over St. Joseph's.
Carroll and Hanafin are both 5-for-11 this weekend, each with a home run. Carroll has knocked in five RBI in four games.
In game one, the Red Storm took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first off of an illegal pitch by Kerry Hickey. Hickey led off the bottom of the second with a double and scored when Kathy McLaughlin walked with the bases loaded.
McLaughlin brought in two RBI in the bottom of the third with a single to leftfield to give the Terps a 3-1 lead.
The Red Storm scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at three. In the bottom of the seventh, Hanafin, Hickey and Nikki Maier all walked to load the bases at the start of the inning. Carroll sent a fly ball to centerfield to score Hanafin for the win.
Freshman Ashley Czechner (6-1) picked up the win for Maryland with 5 2/3 innings of relief work. She gave up five hits and two earned runs.
The game against the Hawks was a pitching duel between Hickey and St. Joseph's Erin Gallagher. The two teams took a 0-0 tie into the eighth inning.
Sophomore Sara Acosta was placed on second to start the inning. She advanced to third off of Vangie Galindo's single to left and scored off of Hanafin's base hit. With runners on second and third, Hickey singled and scored two more runs. Carroll sent another base hit down the leftfield line for the fourth Terrapin run.
St. Joseph's scored one run early in the inning and left runners on second and third to end the game.
Hickey ended the game with 10 strikeouts and four hits in her 8.0 innings of work.
The Terrapins will play Quinnipiac Sunday at noon in their final game in the Under Armour Showcase.
After this weekend, Maryland will return home this week to play host to Fordham in a doubleheader beginning Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Rams came to College Park last May for the NCAA Regionals.
