The Maryland softball team notched two shutout wins Saturday in the Maryland Round Robin tournament to extend its win streak to nine. The Terps (18-9) beat Utah 6-0 in their first game of the day and Villanova 5-0 in game two.
Terrapin pitchers Kerry Hickey and Kendra Knight, who each started a game, allowed just five hits and one walk in 14.0 innings of work between the two of them. They combined for 18 strikeouts and batters hit just .114 against them.
Senior Marisha Branson had three hits and brought in five RBI on the day. Freshman Amanda McCann, sophomore Sara Acosta and junior Vangie Galindo also had three hits between the two games.
In game one, Maryland scored four of its six runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Branson sent a two-RBI single up the middle. Hickey followed that up with a double to left that brought in two more runs.
The Terps added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. McCann singled to get on base. Acosta doubled to bring in McCann and Galindo doubled down the leftfield line to bring in Acosta.
In game two, the Terrapins scored all five runs in the top of the fifth. McCann led off with a triple off the rightfield wall. Acosta reached on an error by the Wildcats to score McCann. With runners on first and second with two outs, Branson hit a three-run homer over the rightfield wall to put Maryland up 4-0. Hickey doubled off the centerfield wall and sophomore Kathy McLaughlin brought her home with a double down the leftfield line.
Maryland will play Hampton at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, then Villanova at 2:30 p.m. Admission for all of the weekend's games is free. Maryland will also be hosting the NCAA Women's Basketball First Rounds Sunday in the Comcast Center, so fans should be advised to plan accordingly for parking and traffic.
