The Maryland softball team extended its win streak to 11 with wins over Hampton and Villanova Sunday in the final day of the Maryland Round Robin. The Terps (20-9) beat the Pirates 9-1 in six innings and the Wildcats 1-0.
Senior Kerry Hickey notched six RBI against Hampton with a grand slam in the first inning, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. She pitched seven scoreless innings against Villanova, giving up just three hits and one walk.
In their five games over the weekend, the Terrapins outscored their opponents 26-1. They notched three straight shutouts in games on Friday and Saturday.
In game one against the Pirates, freshman Ashley Czechner notched 16 strikeouts in the six inning game. She gave up one hit in the game, a home run to Hampton's Heather Ryder.
Maryland scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to Kerry Hickey's grand slam with one out. Junior Bree Hanafin brought in the Terps' first run of the game with a double left to score sophomore Sara Acosta from second.
The Terrapins added two runs in the bottom fourth. Marisha Branson walked with the bases loaded to score one, then Hickey sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring in Hanafin.
They ended the game in the bottom of the sixth Hickey when added her sixth RBI with a single up the middle. Pinch hitter Brittany Murray singled to bring in the final run.
In the Villanova game, the Terrapins combined for six hits, including two from Hanafin. Freshman Candice Beards scored the game's lone run with an RBI double to left centerfield.
Maryland will open ACC play at Virginia (14-15, 0-1 ACC) next weekend. The Terps and the Cavaliers will play a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday, with a third game scheduled for noon Sunday. Live stats will be available.
