COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team picked up a pair of wins from Georgetown Wednesday night in a midweek doubleheader at Robert E. Taylor Stadium.
In the first game, the Terps flashed their offensive skills, topping the Hoyas 10-0 in five innings, while in the second, they squeaked out a much closer victory, as they won 1-0.
Freshman Ashley Czechner started on the mound in the first game and struck out seven over five innings. Czechner allowed just one hit to the Hoyas (9-28).
In the bottom of the first inning, the Terrapin bats came alive, as Maryland scored nine runs on eight hits.
After junior Vangie Galindo hit a one-out triple and junior Bree Hanafin reached on a fielder's choice, sophomore Lexi Carroll hit a towering three-run home run for Maryland's first score.
Maryland batted through the lineup, scoring six additional runs as all nine Terps reached base in the first inning.
In the bottom of the second, the Terps added one final run, with senior Kerry Hickey scoring on a sacrifice from junior Kathy McLaughlin.
With a 10-run advantage, Czechner shut out Georgetown, allowing just one base runner and securing Maryland's 23rd win of the season.
In the second game, junior Kendra Knight continued where Czechner left off with a three-up, three-down top of the first that included a pair of strikeouts.
Leading off in the bottom of the first, freshman Amanda McCann reached on an error and eventually scored Maryland's sole run of the game thanks to sophomore Nikki Maier's bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
Despite allowing eight Hoyas to reach base, Knight used strong defense and timely strikeouts to ensure Maryland the doubleheader sweep. In all, Knight fanned five while shutting out Georgetown.
The Terrapins will look to move above .500 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this weekend when they play host to Boston College in three games over two days, beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. Gametracker live stats will be available for all games.
