COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team fell to East Carolina 2-0 Saturday in the NCAA Regionals at Robert E. Taylor Stadium. Earlier in the day, the Terrapins beat Lehigh 11-0 in five innings, but the loss to the Pirates eliminated the Terps from the NCAA Tournament.

The Terps (40-19) finish with the most wins in program history since 1999, when they finished with 51. This year marks the first time the Terrapins have earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years.

Junior Kendra Knight started in the circle in both games. She allowed one earned run over 11.0 innings with 13 strikeouts. She pitched a complete game against the Pirates.

Sophomore Sara Acosta went 4-for-4 against ECU and 5-for-7 on the day. Juniors Kathy McLaughlin, Vangie Galindo and sophomore Nikki Maier each had three hits between the two games.

In the final game of the day, the Pirates (41-21) took the lead in the top of the second inning, when they scored off of a Terps' error in the top of the second. Then, shortstop Kathy McLaughlin threw to catcher Samantha Mallory to get Suzanne Riggs out at home.

The Pirates tacked on another run in the top of the seventh with a groundout that brought in a run.

The Terrapins rallied to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but strong defensive fielding from the Pirates cut the rally short.

East Carolina pitcher Toni Paisley gave up eight hits and notched eight strikeouts.

Against Lehigh, Maryland had a season-high 15 hits, with two hits coming from six players and nine total players notching at least a hit.

The Terrapins took an early 3-0 lead with a two-out bases loaded single by Maier to score junior Bree Hanafin from third. Two more runs came in when the next batter, McLaughlin, reached on a Lehigh error.

They added a three more runs in the top of the second. Hanafin started the scoring when she scored Galindo from second with a two out single to right. Senior Marisha Branson scored Hanafin for the fifth run with a chopper to second, then Maier scored the sixth run with a single to center.

Acosta scored McLaughlin as the seventh run with a base hit up the middle in the top of the third. Senior Kerry Hickey added the eighth run with a solo home run to deep centerfield in the top of the fourth.

Maryland added three more runs in the top of the fifth. McLaughlin scored on a Lehigh passed ball, then freshman Candice Beards tripled to the left corner to score runs 10 and 11 for the Terps.

Knight pitched the first three innings of the first game, allowing just two hits, no runs and notching seven strikeouts. Freshman Ashley Czechner came on to pitch in the bottom of the fourth.

Three Lehigh pitchers saw action in the game. Rebecca Bliss pitched the first 3.0 innings, then Ashley Quigley and Kelsey Lee threw the last two. They combined for 15 hits, five earned runs, two strikeouts and a walk.

East Carolina will take on Baylor Sunday at noon. If East Carolina wins the noon game, a second game will be played at 2:30 p.m. The winner of tomorrow will advance to the NCAA Super Regionals.

Single day passes are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors, youths, and students. Please call 1-800-IM-A-TERP or visit the Terrapin Ticket Office online at here.
