COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland softball team honored its five seniors Sunday with a 5-0 win over North Carolina at Robert E. Taylor Stadium. The Terps (38-16, 12-7 ACC) ended the regular season Sunday as well.
The Terps honored Marisha Branson, Lauren Ghent, Marybeth Herrick, Kerry Hickey and Brittany Murray Sunday in the Senior Day ceremony.
Junior Vangie Galindo had a hit in the first inning that broke Maryland's single season hits record of 70 set by Jenny Belak in 2006.
Sophomore Sara Acosta went 4-for-4 on the day with three singles and a double.
Hickey started in the circle for Maryland. She pitched her 5.0 innings allowed just four hits and two walks.
The Terrapins got on the board with one run in the bottom of the first. With Acosta on third and Galindo on second, junior Kathy McLaughlin hit into a fielder's choice. Acosta was called out at home, but as UNC catcher Ally Blake threw to first to get McLaughlin, Galindo scored.
Maryland added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out and the bases loaded, McLaughlin doubled down the left field line to score Nikki Maier and Acosta for a 3-0 lead. Junior Bree Hanafin tacked on the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Galindo and Hickey followed with an RBI double to left center for a 5-0 Maryland advantage.
Three of the five seniors batted in the bottom of the sixth: Ghent, Herrick and Murray. Herrick hit a hard shot to center for a base hit.
The Terrapins will head to Atlanta this week for the annual ACC Tournament, hosted this year by top-seeded Georgia Tech. To find out when the Terps play and their next opponent, check umterps.com later Sunday evening.
