AIKEN, S.C. -
The Maryland men's golf team opened its spring season Monday at the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club. The Terps fired an opening-round 302 to place them in 13th heading into the second round on Tuesday. Senior Joey Rice led the Terps with a 4-over 74.
"We struggled a bit in the opening round and we were careless around the greens," said Director of Intercollegiate Golf Jason Rodenhaver. "In a field of this caliber every shot is precious. Our effort was there and I see us bouncing back in the second round."
Rice paced the Terps with a 37 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine. The Dunkirk, Md., native currently sits in a tie for 26th.
Sophomore Will Wiseman is one stroke behind Rice. Wiseman opened the day with a team-low round of 36 on the front nine. He finished the day with 5-over 75 and is tied for 20th.
Sophomore Sean Bosdosh and freshman Ben Warnquist finished tied for 52nd and 59th, respectively. Freshman Jordan Sweet opened with a 38 on the front nine and sits in a tie for 73rd.
The second round will begin Tuesday at 9 a.m. Clemson, Furman and South Carolina are tied for first with an opening round 286. Individually, Clemson's Crawford Reeves, East Carolina's Ben Kohles and Harold Varner of East Carolina are tied for first with a 1-under 69.
