Gulick Named To Top 10 College Women

April 12, 2012

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Colleen Gulick of the 2011 national champion Maryland field hockey team was named one of Glamour magazine's Top 10 College Women recently. The bioengineering major is one the nation's best cyclists, all while winning two NCAA field hockey titles.

Gulick has been a starter for the Terrapins and has helped them go to three Final Fours, three NCAA championship games, win two NCAA titles and two ACC titles, all while working on her bioengineering degree. She is the only woman in the U.S. ever to medal in a men's cycling race and is ranked sixth in the nation for female cyclists in her age group (20 to 29). She's won three cycling national titles and 30 national medals. She won a record-eight medals in a single national championship and intends to train for the 2016 Olympics.

"Colleen represents the epitome of the NCAA multi-sport scholar-athlete. During the recruitment process, Colleen made her dreams clear, in completing her degree in bioengineering, become an ACC and NCAA Champion and be in position to cycle for Team USA in the 2016 Olympic Games," head coach Missy Meharg said. "She is one of hardest working women I have ever coached both physically and mentally. She is tough to the core. We applaud Glamour Magazine for noticing and recognizing Colleen for the extraordinary student athlete she is."

Last summer, Gulick saw a link on an email from the University of Maryland to apply to be named one of Glamour's Top College Women. She filled out the extensive application form, sent in numerous letters of recommendation and schedule a phone interview with the editor. She kept in touch with the editors of Glamour throughout the fall and was notified last month that she was on the final list.

"Overall, I'm honored to have been selected as one of Glamour Magazine's Top Ten College Women," Gulick said. "It was, and still is, a great experience but I definitely can't take all of the credit. I never would have been able to accomplish this without the support of Maryland and so many family and friends."

Gulick went to New York for the Top 10 College Women event, met the other nine honorees, along with some strong women from Google and some non-profit organizations.
