The Maryland softball team fell to Georgia Tech, 5-0, Sunday behind a late rally by the Yellow Jackets. Senior Kathy McLaughlin outhit the Jackets herself and senior Kendra Knight allowed just three hits in the Terps' battle.
Knight held the Jackets (27-16, 9-3 ACC) without a hit until the fifth inning. She allowed three hits, three earned runs, eight strikeouts and nine walks. McLaughlin went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Terps (20-17, 0-6).
Georgia Tech got their first run in the bottom of the first after Knight allowed two walks and hit two batters to bring it in.
Georgia Tech added three runs in the bottom of the fifth off of one hit and two Terrapin errors. Alysha Rudnik hit an RBI triple to make it 2-0 Jackets with one out. She scored on a throwing error by the Terps on a squeeze play. Hope Rush drew a walk, then Kaitlin Kates came on to pinch run for her. Kates scored on a throwing error by Maryland to make it 4-0 Georgia Tech.
The Jackets added one more run in the bottom of the sixth off of a Terps error and two hits.
Next, the Terrapins will welcome Virginia (19-17, 5-7) to College Park this weekend for a three-game series. They will play two games Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a 1 p.m. game Sunday as well. Admission and parking are both free.
