COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Six student-athletes of the 2011 national champion Maryland field hockey team were named to USA Field Hockey's Junior National teams, announced this week.
Juniors Ali McEvoy and Jill Witmer and sophomores Maxine Fluharty and Katie Gerzabek were all named to the Under-21 squad. Incoming freshmen Anna Dessoye and Alyssa Parker made the Under-19 team.
McEvoy, Witmer, Fluharty and Gerzabek all have extensive experience with the U.S. national team system and are repeat honorees on the Under-21 squad. The four Terrapins traveled to London in April for a test series with the Under-21 team.
Dessoye and Parker were on the Under-19 team for the past year.
Selections were made following the completion of Junior National Camp held last week at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The four-day training camp allowed 100 athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of selectors for a spot on the U.S. Junior National Squads.
The Under-21 squad is comprised of 30 athletes, several of whom will report to a training camp next month in College Park in preparation for the Junior Pan American Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico, September 8-24.
The Terrapins will take on the Under-21 team in an exhibition match at noon on Aug. 18 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Roughly two dozen athletes were named to the Under-19 squad. These athletes will report to a training camp in January 2013 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Following the training camp, select athletes will be announced to a travel squad that will tour internationally next spring.
The selected squads are eligible for competitive opportunities for the remainder of 2012 and early 2013. Selections will be made again next summer.
