Jane Lifts #12 Terps Past Drexel

Senior Sunny Jane scored his first goal of the season as the No. 12 Maryland men's soccer team defeated Drexel 1-0 on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.

The Terrapins (6-3-5, 4-1-3 ACC) held possession for most of the match as the Dragons (7-5-2) bunkered in their own half. Jane's tally was his first since he notched two goals against Coastal Carolina in the third round of the NCAA tournament last season.

The match started off slow with the Terps knocking the ball around the midfield but unable to find any good chances. Sophomore Mikias Eticha had the first real opportunity of the match in the 28th minute, but his 20-yard scorcher from just outside the box went wide.

Freshman Michael Sauers had the Terps best chance in the first half, ripping a shot that Drexel defender Tal Bublil headed off the line.

The second half once again saw massive amounts of Terp possession, but no results. Senior Patrick Mullins livened up proceedings in the middle of the half with two close-range efforts that flashed wide of Drexel keeper Tyler Afflerbach.

Jane finally found the back of the net for the Terps in the 77th minute. The senior latched onto the end of a Mullins cross at the left post and slotted it past Afflerbach.

The Terps rebounded from a tough outing against Wake Forest with their third shutout of the season.  Maryland outshot the Dragons 16-3 in the match.

“I thought it was a very good performance on the defensive side of the ball,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I felt that it was a great commitment overall for a full 90 minutes from our entire team and a very nice way to bounce back after some defensive letdowns against Wake Forest. We took a giant step forward on the defensive side of the ball.

“When you can shut teams out, you only need one goal to win it, and we got it done tonight.”

Maryland retakes the field on the road against Syracuse on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
