Terps Defeat UMBC, 67-31; Gain 50th Consecutive Non-Conference Victory at Home

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior Keith Booth scored 15 points and sophomore Laron Profit added 13 to lead Maryland past UMBC, 67-31, here tonight at Cole Field House. Maryland has now won 50 consecutive non-conference home games - a string which dates back to December 30, 1989. It is the longest current streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Maryland improves to 4-0 while UMBC falls to 0-3. The victory was the fewest points the Terps had allowed since January 9, 1971 when they defeated South Carolina, 30-31, in the famous "slow-down" game which saw both teams the ball for great lengths of the contest.

The Terps broke open the contest late in the first half as they outscored the Retrievers, 10-2, during the final 2:43 of the first half. Profit scored four points and Booth added three during the stretch.

Booth scored eight of his team high 15 in the second half as Maryland stretched its lead to as many as 37 points. The Terps outscored the Retrievers 28-5 in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Junior Sarunas Jasikevicius added 12 points and five assists while sophomore Terrell Stokes scored eight points, had six steals and five assists.

Maryland shot 49.1 percent from the field while holding UMBC to 25.0 percent from the field.

The Terps will play California in the first round of the Franklin National Bank/Children's Charities Classic Sunday at USAir Arena. The game begins at 1:30 and will be televised nationally.
