#2 Maryland Powers Past Pennsylvania, 9-0

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team powered its way past Pennsylvania, 9-0, Sunday with the Terps' biggest offensive outburst of the season. Eight Terrapins scored as Maryland (11-2, 4-1 B1G) picked up its sixth straight win.

The Terrapins scored six goals off of their eight penalty corners. Junior Sarah Sprink scored twice for the Terrapins and junior Anna Dessoye notched a career-high six points with a penalty stroke and four assists.

"We had great penalty corner execution," head coach Missy Meharg said. "We had very good depth on Maryland's team. We started out a bit slow. Our fundamentals were a bit slow and we gave up some penalty corners. All-in-all, a great weekend for Maryland and a great day for us to rest some players in the second half to get ready for a big game at Princeton Wednesday."

Maryland took the early lead with two goals in the first six minutes. Captain Maxine Fluharty opened the scoring when she popped one in past the Quakers' keeper off a rebound on a penalty corner just 2:26 into the match.

Four minutes later, Sprink banged one in off a penalty corner set up by Dessoye and captain Katie Gerzabek for the 2-0 lead.

Junior Alyssa Parker made it a three-goal lead for the Terrapins just 15 minutes into the game when she got behind the Penn goalkeeper after a long run and pass from Dessoye. Junior Shari Jones added a fourth Maryland goal with 3:30 left in the first half when she tapped in a shot off another rebound.

Sprink found the back of the cage on another penalty corner at the end of the first half, which was set up again by Dessoye and Gerzabek. Maryland took a 5-0 lead into the break.

The Terrapins didn't show any signs of slowing down at the start of the second half, scoring twice in the first five minutes. Freshman Carrie Hanks buried a shot off a rebound on another penalty corner 2:36 into the second half. Less than two minutes later, freshman Moira Putsch scored off another corner from Dessoye and Hanks to make it a 7-0 lead for the Terps.

Dessoye made it an eight-goal lead when she made a penalty stroke awarded to the Terps in the 46th minute. Emma Rissinger scored Maryland's ninth goal of the day when she pushed one over the line off a rebound on a penalty corner in the 52nd minute.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera and junior goalkeeper Jill Genovese each played a half and combined for five saves in the shutout.

The win was Maryland's largest since a 9-0 win over Georgetown on Oct. 27, 2013.

Next, Maryland will play at Princeton (3-8) Wednesday at 6 p.m. Live stats will be available at GoPrincetonTigers.com and the game will be shown online on The Ivy League Digital Network.

The Terrapins will return home next weekend to host another Big Ten opponent in Rutgers (6-6, 1-4) next Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
