COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's soccer team pushed its winning streak to three games with a 2-0 shutout of Lehigh Wednesday at a rainy Ludwig Field.
Mikias Eticha accounted for both goals as Maryland (6-5-2, 2-2-1 Big Ten) pushed its shutout streak to 270 consecutive minutes. The Terps have not surrendered a goal since an overtime heartbreaker at Northwestern on Oct. 5.
Eticha put Maryland on the board with the Terps' ninth chance of the first half. With playing conditions worsening over the course of the first stanza, Mael Corboz controlled a ball on the far sideline and found David Kabelik, who unselfishly centered the ball to a streaking Eticha for the open-net goal in the 33rd minute.
Eticha picked up his second goal of the match in the 72nd minute. Corboz made a strong play down the far sideline to beat his defender and find Jereme Raley just outside the box. Raley quickly dished to Eticha who put the ensuing shot past keeper Ciaran Nugent at the top corner of the box to the far post for the 2-0 cushion.
Lehigh (6-6) had only five shots on the night and its two legitimate looks at goal came with less than 10 minutes to play, going wide and high, respectively.
“I thought this was a great team performance and defensively we were outstanding once again,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We generated a lot of chances and probably deserved a few more goals but I'm very proud of another shutout and another positive performance for our squad today.
“I'm glad we were able to get the game in as well. Our facilities staff did a fantastic job.”
Maryland travels to No. 5 Indiana Sunday for a Big Ten Network-televised match against the Hoosiers. The contest is slated for 1 p.m.
