Freshmen Shine in Terps? Exhibition Win Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman guard Melo Trimble scored 19 points, Dion Wiley had 16, and the Maryland men's basketball team surged in an impressive second half to defeat San Francisco State, 86-52, in its exhibition opener Saturday afternoon.

Maryland established its dominance early on with an impressive three-point shooting display from Trimble, who finished the first half with a team-leading 13 points. Fellow classmate Wiley added eight points while redshirt senior Richaud Pack contributed eight of his 15 points of the day in the first half.

The Gators struggled in the first half after the Terps limited the team to just 37 percent shooting through the opening 20 minutes. Maryland shot 50 percent from the field and was a stout 12-for-13 from the charity stripe to gain an early cushion before halftime. Trimble was 3-for-7 behind the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to lead the Terps at the break.

“Melo had a lot of composure out there,” head coach Mark Turgeon said. “He really made some nice plays defensively and he's a real good player.”

The Terps came out with a determined focus on defense in the second half, picking up two quick turnovers to push their lead to 16 early in the period. Freshman Jared Nickens, who ended his Maryland debut with 13 points, led the team in the second half with 10 points, three rebounds and a steal while shooting 3-for-5 from three-point range.

The Terps shot 54.5 percent (24-for-44) from the field for the game while shooting 51.9 percent (14-for-27) from long range. Maryland also received 33 points off the bench as every active player saw time on the floor.

Maryland faces Bowie State in the Terps' second and final exhibition next Saturday at noon.
