Solomon Eye Terps of the Week: Steffen and Corboz

Each week during the 2014-15 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the playing field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week. The Maryland men's soccer team made it two-in-a-row, winning Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week honors two straight weeks.

Junior midfielder/forward Mael Corboz has been named Solomon Eye Terp of the Week for his scoring efforts in two games against Rutgers on Nov. 5 and Nov. 9.

In the regular season finale, Corboz, a Rutgers transfer, scored the game's first goal in his return to Piscataway, N.J. The Terps never looked back on their way to a 3-2 victory and Big Ten regular season championship.

Five days later, the Scarlet Knights made the trip to College Park for the Big Ten Conference Tournament quarterfinal and Corboz struck again, this time by way of a penalty kick.

Alex Shinsky was taken down in the box with 31:17 remaining in the first half. Corboz buried the ensuing penalty kick for his team-leading ninth goal of the year. The Terps went on to win 2-0 and advance to the semifinals against Michigan State.

"He's a very honest, hard-working, skillful player," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “Mael is just a kid who does all the right things. He gets along with all his teammates, very coachable, very driven.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Zack Steffen has been named Solomon Eye Terp of the Week for his strong showing in the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Nov. 14 and Nov. 16.

The Downingtown, Pa. native was crucial for the Terps as they captured their first Big Ten Tournament Championship and third straight conference title.

In the semifinals against Michigan State, Steffen held the Spartans scoreless for 110 minutes and came up with two saves in the penalty shootout as the Terps advanced 3-2 on PKs.

Steffen recorded a career-high six saves in Sunday's championship win against Indiana. Midway through the first half, Steffen came up with the biggest save of the game to keep the Hoosiers off the board and swing some momentum to the home side. Off a long throw-in to the middle of the box, he used quick reflexes to deflect a one-timed volley over the crossbar.

“Everybody on this team believes in each other,” Steffen said. “We believe in this team…I knew that we would pull it out.”

Steffen capped off the week by earning Big Ten Tournament Defensive MVP.
