CHICAGO - Maryland freshman guard Melo Trimble earned co-Big Ten Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors, the Big Ten Conference announced on Monday.
Trimble, who averaged 21.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, led Maryland to a 4-0 week with wins over Arizona State and No. 13 Iowa State at the CBE Classic and home victories over Monmouth and VMI.
Honored as the CBE Hall of Fame Classic Most Valuable Player, Trimble and the Terps are ranked No. 21 in this week's Associated Press Top 25. This marks Maryland's first appearance in the Top 25 since the 2009-10 season (March 15, 2010 – ranked No. 20).
Trimble scored a career-high 31 points, including four three-pointers and a 13-of-14 effort from the free throw line in Maryland's victory over Arizona State. He was just two points shy of the freshman single-game scoring record by Joe Smith, who poured in 33 points against Rider in 1993. Trimble added 11 points, pulled down three rebounds and swiped three steals against the aforementioned 13th-ranked Cyclones.
Trimble scored 24 points, including a 13-of-14 effort from the free throw line, and corralled five rebounds in the win against Monmouth. He recorded 19 points on 6-of-6 shooting and tallied three steals in the victory over VMI.
Maryland, ranked No. 21, will host No. 7 Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 9:15 p.m. at XFINITY Center.
