Melo Trimble was tabbed Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week, announced Monday. Trimble, who averaged 13.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists on the week, led Maryland to a pair of wins over NC Central and USC Upstate. Trimble posted his first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the win against USC Upstate and also added 12 points while connecting on all eight of his free throw attempts in the victory over NC Central.

• The Terps' No. 17 ranking in this week's Associated Press Top 25 represents Maryland's highest ranking in the polls since March 5, 2007 when the Terps were also ranked No. 17 in the nation.

Jake Layman scored 17 points for his 11th double-figure scoring performance of the year and Evan Smotrycz - who returned from an ankle injury after missing the previous three games - added 10 for the Terrapins in a 67-57 win over USC Upstate its last time out.
Richaud Pack leads the Big Ten in plus-minus ratio and the Terps are outscoring opponents by 18.7 points when the senior guard is on the floor.

• Oklahoma State is 9-1 with its loss coming at South Carolina, 75-49, on Dec. 6. Le'Bryan Nash and Phil Forte are averaging 17.7 and 17.1 points, respectively, to lead the Cowboys offensively. Forte has attempted a team-high 116 shots while Nash and Michael Cobbins are posting a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game.

• Maryland edged Oklahoma State, 50-49, in the Memphis Invitational at the Mid-South Coliseum on Dec. 16, 1966 in the lone meeting between the two programs.

• Trimble's 31-point showing against Arizona State is the most for a Maryland freshman since Joe Smith posted 33 points against Rider in 1993.

Layman Stepping up

Jake Layman has posted 11 consecutive double-digit scoring performances to kick off his junior campaign at Maryland.

• In Dez Wells' absence, Layman has asserted himself on the offensive end. He has averaged 16.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.8 field goals, 10.8 field goal attempts, 5.5 free throws, 7.3 free throw attempts and 31.3 minutes during the past six games (Monmouth, VMI, Virginia, Winthrop, NC Central and USC Upstate). The forward has attempted double-figure shots four times during that stretch after not having done so once prior to Wells' injury. He attempted a career-high 15 shots vs. USC Upstate.

• The Wrentham, Mass., native is averaging 15.4 points per game and is 12th in the Big Ten in scoring through the first 11 games.

• Head coach Mark Turgeon spent four seasons at Texas A&M in the Big 12 Conference prior to landing at Maryland in 2011.

• Turgeon was 5-3 with the Aggies vs. Oklahoma State, including three-straight wins to conclude his stint at A&M.

Season Preview: Terps Think B1G in 2014-15

• With a top-10 recruiting class and his most experienced team in four years as head coach at Maryland, Mark Turgeon has the Terrapins poised for its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference.

• Maryland, which finished 17-15 last season, boasts a balanced team featuring a mix of veteran leadership and key newcomers. Among the leaders is 2013 ACC-All Conferece and USBWA All-District III selection Dez Wells, who changed his number to 44 to honor a deceased former teammate for his senior season. Wells is joined by seniors Evan Smotrycz and Jon Graham and sophomore Damonte Dodd in the frontcourt, in addition to junior Jake Layman on the wing.

• Turgeon also hauled in the ninth-best recruiting class in the nation according to Scout.com, showcasing McDonald's All-American point guard Melo Trimble (Upper Marlboro, Md.), shooting guard Dion Wiley (Oxon Hill, Md.), guard Jared Nickens (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) and forward Michal Cekovsky (Slovakia, Europe).
