Terps Rout JMU In 2014 Season Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - C.J. Brown accounted for 172 total yards and four touchdowns to lead the University of Maryland football team to a 52-7 rout of James Madison in the Terps' 2014 season opener.

Brown scored on runs of 11, eight and two yards in the first half to help the Terps build a 24-0 lead going into halftime.

Brandon Ross opened the scoring in the third quarter with an impressive 8-yard run before Brown capped his day with a 41-yard touchdown strike to Deon Long.

Kenneth Goins Jr.and Albert Reid capped the Terrapins' scoring efforts with touchdown runs of two and 12 yards, respectively.

Ross led the Terps with 86 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Wes Brown had 81 yards on 13 carries.

Stefon Diggs was Maryland's leading receiver with five catches for 53 yards and thrilled the 45,080 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium with a 59-yard kickoff return. Diggs led all players with 112 all-purpose yards.

James Madison's lone score came early in the third quarter when the Dukes turned a Maryland turnover into a short field. That 27-yard drive was finished off by a 1-yard plunge by John Miller.

The Terrapin defense was led by L.A. Goree, who totaled 14 tackles, including seven solo efforts. Sean Davis also turned in a double-digit tackle day with 10, including eight solos.

Anthony Nixon and Jeremiah Johnson had interceptions for the Terps, with Johnson's coming in the end zone as the first half clock came to a close. 

William Likely also had a big day for Maryland with four solo tackles, including a sack for 15 yards, a pass break-up and one punt return for 35 yards.

Brad Craddock connected on his only field goal attempt of the day, a 49-yarder in the first quarter. He also converted all seven extra-point attempts and had seven of his nine kickoffs result in touchbacks.

The Dukes were led by quarterback Vad Lee, who had 141 passing yards and 27 rushing yards. Khalid Abdullah finished the game with 67 yards on 20 carries for JMU.

Maryland returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 6 when the Terps hit the road for the first time in 2014 at South Florida. Kickoff for the Terrapins and Bulls is set for 3:30 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium. The game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
