#12 Terps Tie Michigan in First-Ever Big Ten Match

ANN ARBOR, Mich. The No. 12 Maryland men's soccer team picked up a hard-fought result Friday night, tying Michigan 1-1 in the University's first-ever Big Ten Conference match.

Junior David Kabelik tallied the equalizer for Maryland (1-2-2) with 22 seconds remaining to force the match into overtime. It is the Terps' second double overtime affair in eight days.

After a scoreless first half which saw the majority of action contained to the midfield, Michigan struck first in the second stanza. James Murphy's back header off a free kick from Rylee Woods just beat a leaping Zack Steffen for the first goal of the match in the 75th minute.

The Terps answered in a big way when Kabelik snagged a cross from Alex Crognale and found the back of the net in the 90th minute to knot the game at one apiece.

Maryland controlled the momentum during extra time but was unable to find the game-winner. The Terps had two solid chances in overtime including a Mael Corboz shot which was saved by Michigan keeper Adam Grinwis in the 94th minute and a Chris Odoi-Atsem strike which went just wide of the goal with 1:29 remaining in the second overtime period.

The Terps outshot Michigan (1-2-1) 14-11 on the night. Maryland used all but three active players in the match, including Ryan Reid and Dakota Edwards who each shined in their first action of the season.

“This was an extremely hard-fought game today and I'm really proud we found the character to get a goal in the last 20 seconds and take it into overtime,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We really pushed for a victory and had some quality chances in overtime but at the end of the day getting a tie against a good team like Michigan on the road is a good result and a fair result today.”

Maryland will welcome Michigan State for its first ever Big Ten home match next Friday at Ludwig Field. The contest is slated for 8 p.m. and will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.
