BOONE, N.C. – The Maryland volleyball team went 1-1 Saturday in the second day of the Black & Gold Challenge. The Terps notched a 3-0 win over Georgia State (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) before falling to host Appalachian State in three sets (18-25, 23-25, 18-25).
Maryland (7-2, 0-0 Big Ten) dominated the first match against the Panthers (2-7, 0-1 Sun Belt). Senior outside hitter Ashleigh Crutcher led Maryland with 13 kills while senior middle blocker Catie Coyle and freshman middle blocker Hailey Murray each had 10. Amy Dion led the defense with 11 digs.
The Terps jumped out to an early five-point lead and although the Panthers came within one, Maryland easily closed the set. The Terps followed suit in the second set, scoring four straight points to take the 2-0 lead. In the third, Maryland did not allow Georgia State within four points in the second half of the set to take the match win.
The Maryland defense held the Panthers to just a .149 hitting percentage, including .100 in the third set.
Against the Mountaineers (11-0, 1-0 Sun Belt), the Terps were unable to carry the momentum from the first match. Appalachian State tallied four straight points to finish the first set. Maryland kept up in the second match, but at 24-23, Coyle's attack error gave the set win to the Mountaineers.
The teams were tied with 12 points apiece in the third set before Appalachian State took off. The Mountaineers held the Terps to just five more points while closing the match out.
Crutcher and Dion again led the team as Crutcher picked up 12 kills and Dion recorded 13 digs.
Murray was named to the all-tournament team.
The Terps travel to Seattle next week for their final nonconference tournament in the Pac-12/Big Ten Showcase. Maryland will play Washington at 11 p.m. and USC Friday at 8:30 p.m.
