SEATTLE – Facing their first ranked opponent of the season, the Maryland volleyball team (7-3) fell to No. 5 Washington, 3-0 (20-25, 15-25, 14-25), Thursday in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge.
Despite the daunting opponent, the Terps made smart plays in the first set. With the Huskies up 22-12, Maryland tallied five straight points to cut the Washington lead to five. Maryland caused trouble again as the Huskies tried to score the set point. The Terps were able to score three times before the Huskies finally tallied the winning score to take the set, 25-20.
In the beginning of the second set, Maryland stayed close with Washington. The Huskies had a narrow 13-11 lead before they took off, scoring the next six points. The Terps tried to climb back, but Washington took the second set, 25-15.
The Husky offense was on display in the third set as Washington took a quick 7-1 lead. Washington hit .480 in the final set as the team took the 25-14 set victory and the 3-0 match win.
Junior outside hitter Emily Fraik and senior outside hitter Ashleigh Crutcher led Maryland with seven kills apiece. Sophomore setter Carlotta Oggioni finished the match with eight assists and nine digs.
Reigning NVCA Player of the Year Krista Vansant led the match with 12 kills and 11 digs.
The Terps have a quick turnaround as they face No. 10 USC (6-3) Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET on the Pac-12 Network. USC was defeated by No. 4 Wisconsin Thursday evening, 3-1.
