COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's soccer team picked up its first win as a member of the Big Ten Conference with a 2-0 shutout victory against Wisconsin Friday night at Ludwig Field.
Maryland (3-3-2, 1-1-1 Big Ten) outshot Wisconsin (1-5-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) 14-4 on the night, dominating possession for the majority of the match. The Terps also held a stout 9-2 corner kick advantage. The Terps picked up goals from sophomore Michael Sauers and senior Dan Metzger early in the second half.
After a scoreless first stanza, Sauers put the Terps on the board with his second goal of the season in the 53rd minute. After Jeroen Meefout snagged the ball on the far sideline, he found Eric Carbajal streaking down the center of the field. Carabajal one-touched Meefout's pass to Sauers, who then finished brilliantly from eight yards for a 1-0 Maryland lead.
Metzger pushed that cushion to two with his second tally of the year six minutes later. Mikey Ambrose placed a perfect ball to the senior captain off a free kick near the corner post and Metzger handled the rest, heading the ball past Wisconsin keeper Casey Beyers from nine yards.
“"We're improving. We're continuing to get better defensively. I think we held a team with some very good attacking players to minimal opportunities,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I thought it was a great team performance on the defensive side of the ball.
“I thought in the first half we dominated possession but we weren't quite as dangerous as I wanted us to be. In the second half, we came out with a lot more malice in our attack. We really pushed the game and were appropriately rewarded with two very nice goals. Once again, I still think the best is yet to come with our attack. It's a work in progress but we're getting better."
The Terps notched their third shutout of the year and their second straight.
Maryland will host No. 11 Georgetown Tuesday at Ludwig Field. The contest – which is a rematch of the 2012 College Cup semifinal – is slated for 7 p.m.
