Terps Fall to No. 7 Georgetown, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Maryland men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 7 Georgetown Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.

Brandon Allen notched his team-leading eighth goal in the 78th minute for Georgetown, which moved to 6-1-3 on the year. The junior forward, who ranks fifth nationally in goals, beat Terrapin keeper Zack Steffen with a 10-yard finish to his left after a ball was centered from the far side by Alex Muyl.

The goal snapped a fabulous defensive stand for Maryland, which stretched over 274 minutes dating back to a Michigan State goal in the ninth minute on Sept. 19.

The action started early when a mere three minutes into the match, Steffen made a highlight-reel save off a strong header by Muyl. The defense limited a stout Georgetown offense to only eight shots on the night.

Maryland (3-4-2, 1-1-1 Big Ten) mustered seven shots of its own, including two decent looks from senior captain Dan Metzger in the 58th and 60th minute, but both opportunities missed just wide. Searching for added production from their attacking unit, the Terps utilized six substitutes on the night, including forwards Emmanuel Korvah, David Kabelik and Jeroen Meefout.

“This was an important game for us to get a result and we just didn't have enough quality in our attack to get one behind their very good defense,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “It's frustrating because we competed hard and went toe-to-toe with them. I thought it was a fairly even game but on one counter we fall asleep. It's a fast break and it shouldn't happen.

“We have too much quality and too much experience and at some point our guys are going to need to raise their level. Tonight was disappointing. It was a missed opportunity.”

Maryland travels to Northwestern for a tilt with the Wildcats Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.
