Terps Capture Patriot Invitational Title

FAIRFAX, Va. – Senior Ashleigh Crutcher joined the 1000-kill club as the Maryland volleyball team won its final two matches against East Tennessee State and George Mason to win the Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va., Saturday.

Crutcher is the second Terp in two seasons to achieve the career feat after Mary Cushman did it last year. The title is the second in head coach Steve Aird's career after winning the Elon Phoenix Classic last week.

In the first match of the day against East Tennessee State, the Terps (6-0, 0-0 Big Ten) relied on balance as Crutcher, Adreene Elliot, Hailey Murray and Chavi St. Hill all notched over eight kills. Crutcher nabbed her milestone kill to give the Terps an 18-10 first set lead, a frame they would eventually win 25-16.

ETSU grabbed the second set before the Terps took control in the third. Carlotta Oggioni continued her stellar early season play; setting up numerous Maryland attacks as the Terps won the set, 25-16.

The Bucs tightened up the fourth set late on, but the Terps held firm to take the set, 25-23, and the match. Oggioni finished the match with 43 assists while Emily Fraik totaled a match-high 13 digs.

In match two, the Terps stormed out to win the first set 25-13. Maryland ended the frame with a 13-5 run, with Crutcher notching five kills. Mason was able to win the second set, maintaining a fairly sizable advantage throughout.

The Terps grabbed momentum back in the third set, leading throughout behind the play of Crutcher, who sealed it on set point. Mason responded with a 25-20 fourth set win.

A tight fifth and final set saw the Terps eventually emerge with a 15-13 victory to win the match.

Maryland improved its all-time mark against George Mason to 24-3. It was the Terps' first ever meeting with the Bucs.

Crutcher, Elliot and Oggioni were all named to the all-tournament team. Crutcher was named Best Attacker while Oggioni won the Best Setter award.
