COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After leading the No. 14 Maryland men's basketball team to a 75-59 win over Michigan State Saturday, junior forward Jake Layman exited the locker room and ran into Jake Layman.
Jake Layman, an 8-year-old from Fairfax, Va., attended the Terps game against the Spartans with his 10-year-old brother Max, mother Jeanee and father Brad. Max began playing basketball two years ago, with Jake starting last fall. Before the Maryland game Saturday, Jake scored 14 points, pointing it out it was the same as the Terps' Jake's season average.
Brad grew up in Washington, D.C., as a Maryland fan, attending games at Cole Field House with his father. The Layman brothers took in their first Terps' game with a sold-out crowd Saturday as Maryland swept Michigan State for the season.
The Jakes and Max posed for pictures, and the brothers shared the posters they had brought for the game. After meeting the older Jake Layman, the brothers have declared him their “all-time favorite player.” Max now wants to attend Maryland, and the younger Jake is set on matching the older Jake's career high of 27 points in a game.
Maryland's Jake Layman tallied his fourth double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds against Michigan State. The Terrapins take on Indiana in Bloomington on Jan. 22 at 9 p.m.
