#20 Terps Fall to Delaware Tuesday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No.  20 Maryland men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest to Delaware on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.

After falling down by a goal in the 57th minute, Maryland (6-4-4) evened the score on Emmanuel Korvah's first career goal with less than three minutes to play. But the lead would be brief as Delaware answered in the 89th minute for the victory.

The Terps – who boasted a significant 9-3 shot advantage in the first half – surrendered the first goal of the match off a set piece at 56:26. Ben Sampson headed home a Thomas de Villardi corner kick from short range.

Maryland – which played without 6-6 defender Alex Crognale – searched for a boost in size in the waning minutes of the match and went to their bench for reserves Korvah and Christoffer Wallander-Ianev.

Korvah knotted up the game with a header to the near post at 87:40. Mael Corboz was credited with his team-leading eighth assist of the year.

Delaware proved why it was considered a dangerous counterattacking team when it capitalized on a failed clear with 1:15 to play on a de Villardi goal from just beyond the box for the win.

“This was a really tough game,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We showed our youth tonight. We just couldn't penetrate. Delaware is a highly-committed team. But to tie it up with two minutes to go and give up the goal a little later is completely disheartening and is not of the standard of Maryland Soccer. We are going to get up tomorrow and shift our focus to a big game against Washington on Friday night.”

The Terps will host No. 17 Washington in a Friday night showdown at 7:30 p.m. at Ludwig Field before traveling to Ohio State for a key matchup with the Buckeyes the last weekend in October.
