COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Redshirt sophomore Tyler Goodwin and senior Mark Colabucci each secured bonus point victories to give the Black Team an 18-9 win over the Red Team at the Red & Black Wrestle-Offs at the XFINITY Center Pavilion Sunday afternoon.
The event serves as the final tune up before the season opening Terrapin Duals next weekend. Highly touted redshirt freshman Alfred Bannister picked up a win for the Red Team.
“The guys were excited to get out there,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “Most of these guys haven't competed for a long time so it was good for these guys to put on a show and figure out what it takes to get to the next level. I'm excited about our guys.”
Sophomore Jhared Simmons started off the main event matches with a bang, securing a takedown at the buzzer to knock off freshman Michael Beck and give the Black Team a 3-0 win.
At 133 pounds, redshirt sophomore Tyler Goodwin (Black) rocketed out to a 10-0 lead after one period with multiple near falls before securing a 16-1 tech fall in the second period.
Redshirt freshman Alfred Bannister and redshirt junior Billy Rappo wrestled an entertaining match for a starting spot at 141 pounds. Bannister latched onto a quick takedown to open the match before Rappo escaped to make it 2-1. Rappo's subsequent takedown and a Bannister escape made it 3-3 after one period.
Rappo chose down to start the second and notched an escape before Bannister latched onto a single leg and brought Rappo to the mat. Rappo escaped to make in 5-5, but Bannister's escape to start the third period ultimately put him over the top in a 6-5 victory.
At 149 pounds, freshman Wade Hodges (Red) and redshirt freshman Matt Pente put on a close bout that saw Hodges ride out Pente in the second period before securing a reversal in third to win 3-1.
The 157 pound bout saw another true freshman emerge victorious for the Red Team. Jakob Restrepo nabbed a huge takedown in the final period to take a 5-3 victory over redshirt freshman Patrick Gerish.
Veteran Tyler Manion (Red) took on freshman Brendan Burnham (Black) in the 165-pound featured match. Burnham secured an early takedown in the first period before a Manion escape made the score 2-1. Manion chose down to start the second and escaped to make it 2-2 to start the third.
Burnham came on strong in the final two minutes, securing a late takedown to defeat Manion and give the Black Team an 11-9 lead.
At 174 pounds, freshman Sam Rowell (Black) notched a takedown in the first and second period to take a 4-1 lead after two on Brad Miccio. He reversed Miccio to start the third period and took a 9-2 decision.
The final bout came at 184 with senior Mark Colabucci taking on freshman Jaron Smith. Colabucci notched a four-point near fall at the end of the first period to take control of the match and ultimately secured a 12-1 major decision.
