BALTIMORE - The Maryland men's basketball program visited patients at Baltimore's MedStar Harbor Hospital Tuesday morning.
Head coach Mark Turgeon and student-athletes Varun Ram and Rasheed Sulaimon joined assistant coach Bino Ranson, director of operations Nima Omidvar and special assistant to the head coach Juan Dixon, conversing and laughing with patients and hospital staff while handing out Maryland basketball t-shirts, autographed posters and wristbands.
“I was happy we were able to have the opportunity to come to MedStar Harbor Hospital to visit with patients and the dedicated, hard-working members of the staff,” Turgeon said. “This is an important initiative for our program and something we are focused on doing more of.”
Ram and Suliamon were certainly favorites of both patients and hospital staff.
“I really can't put into words how great it feels to do something like this,” Ram said. “I actually think we get more out of it even then they do. To be able to make someone smile that may be having a tough time in life is really special.”
“It's amazing to have such a positive impact on someone's life, even if it is for just a short amount of time,” Sulaimon said. “I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to come here and visit with patients and their families and hope we were able to make their day a little brighter.”
The Terps will face off against the Princeton Tigers at Royal Farms Arena Saturday, Dec. 19, at 7 pm on the Big Ten Network. It will mark Maryland's first home game in Baltimore since 1999.
