GENEVA Ohio. – Senior Thea LaFond and junior Chioma Onyekwere both earned All-Big Ten honors on day one of the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute.
LaFond finished third in the long jump with a personal best mark of 20'3”. The senior was a two-event star Friday, also advancing to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles after a lifetime best 8.38 in the prelims.
Onyekwere also starred in her first Big Ten Championships, throwing 52'8.25” to finish runner up to Wisconsin's Kelsey Card in the shot put.
In the Pentathlon, freshman Peyton Wade notched a solid fifth-place finish with a lifetime best score of 3,776 points. Junior Lauren Ball finished behind Wade in 11th position with a personal best 3,397.
Maryland's team of Alexandra Lucki (1200m), Emily VandeWater (1600m), Taylor Tucker (400m) and Charlotte Staver (800m) set a new school record of 11:29.37 in the distance medley relay.
A few Terrapins also advanced to Saturday's finals. In the 800m, Myah Hicks notched a season-best 2:09.37 to make the final. Micha Powell ran a season-best mark of 54.97 to make the 400-meter finals.
In the 600m, Catherine Voelpel set a personal best of 1:32.72 while Lisa Meneau set a personal best mark of 8.57 second in the 60-meter hurdles.
The final day competition features the high jump final where LaFond and Amber Melville are favorites. Other finals include the weight throw, triple jump and 60-meter hurdles.
